Martin O'Neill tonight completed his third signing of the summer and his second in the space of a week when Habib Beye joined from Newcastle in a deal worth around £2.5m.

The 31-year-old Senegalese international follows in the footsteps of Stewart Downing and Fabian Delph, who have both arrived at Villa Park during the close-season. He will be expected to compete with Luke Young for the right-back spot as well as offer cover in central defence.

Beye, who had made it clear he was eager to leave St James' Park in the wake of relegation to the Championship at the end of last season, has signed a three-year contract at Villa.

Hull City had also been keen on the former Marseille player and agreed a fee with Newcastle on Thursday but that deal was hijacked when O'Neill's interest in the defender hardened. The Villa manager is now expected to step up his attempts to bring in Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth.

Stolen from Hull!

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart
