Aquilani: 'Arrivederci Roma'
Thursday 6 August, 2009
Alberto Aquilani waves goodbye to Roma as he gets on the flight to Liverpool and admits, “I’m very sad to leave.”

The midfielder was the sacrificial lamb to boost club coffers and will complete his £18m move to Anfield later today.

“I have always been a Roma fan,” the homegrown hero told LaRoma24.it. “However things go, I want to thank all the fans who have been and continue to be close to me.

“I will explain the rest later on, when things are more definitive. I cannot say more now. I’m very sad to leave Roma.”

Aquilani also had words for Francesco Totti, the captain who said he would miss him as a colleague and as a man.

“Francesco is a great friend and a great player, while he too is a Romanista at heart. I thank him for his kind words.

“Roma will still remain strong and competitive, with or without Aquilani. Now I don’t want to add anything more until Monday.”

The Italian international will undergo his medical later today, which is far from a foregone conclusion, as he is still recovering from ankle surgery.
