...Aquilani!

Liverpool have agreed a fee with Roma for the transfer of Italy midfielder Alberto Aquilani.

The price is thought to be in the region of £20million with Aquilani now set for a medical before sealing a move that would see manager Rafa Benitez replace Xabi Alonso.

Benitez is poised to receive around £30million from Real Madrid after Spain international Alonso underwent a medical with the Primera Division giants on Wednesday.

"Alberto is a very good player and I'm delighted we've reached agreement with Roma for his transfer," said Benitez on the club's official website.

"He will travel to Merseyside later this week for a medical. Alberto has a winning mentality and great experience in both Serie A and the Champions League.

"He has long been recognised as a top class talent in Italy, captaining his country at both Under 19 and Under 21 levels before establishing himself in the senior national side."

A statement from the club added: "Liverpool concluded their discussions with Roma once the sale of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid was finally agreed."

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

Talk about throwing 20M down the toilet. They will be lucky to get 10 games out of him.

Good player IMO but I never knew he was so injurty prone until Ant, Wrighty and Kem said it. If he can't keep fit in Italy, well he might have a harder time staying on the pitch in the PL.

Very good player, but thats a huge amount of money for such an injury prone guy. Surely a different player could have been signed, Barry for instance.

Aquilani could be a good player, but i dont see him adapting to the PL quickly and it will be even harder when he starts picking up knocks and missing matches all the time.

I mean that Rafa has known for a while that Real wanted Alonso and after treating him so Xabily last year it wouldn't have taken a genius to realise that Alonso was quite likley to want to leave. Rafa could have pre-empted the sitaution.

But they didn't KNOW he would leave. Therefore buying a replacement would be daft when they had a better player at their disposal.

If that was intentional I'm afraid I don't get it.

Ah shit, I don't pronounce it like that but good one mate, something I'd expect from Digo.

If Roma dont buy anyone good with that money, and Sensi doesnt sell the club she is going to face hell from the fans who are pretty pissed (and thats an understatement).

His best days are long gone. I don't think he'll ever recapture the form that he showed 2-3 years ago which made people sit up and take note. If he remains fit he'll be an adequate replacement, but he really is that injury prone. Risky, very risky signing.

Although it's nice to see a PL side dipping into Serie A.
