Mourinho once again proves he is one of the smartest in the business...

While some in this country seem a bit rattled by the Blues summer spending, not so Jose Mourinho who has defended City’s purchases in a News of the World interview.
"Adebayor up front with Carlos Tevez - unbelievable! And they have Roque Santa Cruz and Robinho too. What a strike force,” he proclaimed.

"It's not buying the title. You buy the players you think can do the job but you still need to prove you are the best - the best coach, the best team and that's tough and no amount of money can buy that."

Elsewhere the Mail is not quite as sure as some of the other publications that John Terry will stay at Chelsea rather than join City but believes the situation will be resolved before the end of next week.

The Daily Star on Sunday reckons that Arsenal and Spurs may join in the bidding for Everton defender Joleon Lescott and the Sunday Times is adamant that the Blues have agreed terms with Arsenal’s Kolo Toure.

Whoever we land between now and the end of August, Robinho will still be smiling. He told The People: "In five years, Manchester City will be a very strong team and a big name in European football. “It is a big project and I want to be a big part of it for a long time. I will be in Manchester for five years... even if it rains; it's not a problem for me."

It's up to Hughes to prove that he is the best this season though. Rafa has done nothing, Wenger nothing for 5 years, Ancelotti won 1 Serie A title with one of the greatest ever Milan sides, and Ferguson just got embarrassed by a rookie in the biggest game of the season. The competition isn't that stiff at the moment.

Fergies won 3 leagues and been in 2 CL finals in the last 3 seasons, Hughes has a massive amount of competition on his hands to match that.

LOL fergie got embarrassed by a rookie. is that your assessment of saf?

3 premier league titles, 1 CL title and 1 runners up medal, 1 Carling cup and a World Club Championship all within 3 years.

no manager in world football could even come close to what he has achieved in the last 3 years let alone 2 decades.

show some respect!

I'd say Man Utd won those trophies, not Fergie. Anyway, Hughes is out there to prove he can be the best, and he'll hopefully give a good account of himself now that he has the players he wants to fit the system he likes.

What makes up Man Utd, any time for that matter? The players and the manager. Who signed those players? Fergie. Who managed those players to success. Where were Man Utd without Fergie, where are they with him? Fergie can take most of the credit for Utd's success. The same could be said for Barca because Pep only brought in 2 new players really, but at the end of the day its the manager who gets the team to play.

Mourinho did it, and with much lesser sides. Tactical genius and coaching masterstrokes.

I'd say yes if Hughes were to win the league with City he will have proven himself, toughest league in the world, building from scratch, would be a top notch job if he achieved it.

Precisely. Mourinho would also always be looking to demonstrate that it the manager, not the money, that makes a team because he was always accused of buying the title.

i was referring to the last 3 years but even then your example of mourinho still comes up short in comparision to saf.

you say he has done it with lesser sides and imply its more of an achievement yet you would praise mark hughes for building from scratch. do you think saf inherited a title winning side or a warchest of millions?

When has Mourinho been in 2 CL finals in a row? Hughes will have proven himself to an extent if he wins the league but he'd still have to keep City at a high level afterwards to have truly proven himself.

He outspent every team in the league for 6 seasons before he managed to win a title.

Success is winning championships. It is nothing less than that. And when you win a championship - and we will - success isn't measured or accomplished by winning once.
