He would have got very close too. Unlike Henry, all Anelka wanted to do was score. He didn't try to create half as much and he was a better finisher than Henry. |

He scored 17 goals in 98/99 and I saw his hat-trick against Leicester earlier, which devalues it somewhat....he was a class act but how come he's had a not so great career if he had the capacity you claim? |

Matter of opinion, Anelka is an unreal finisher. |

He was very poorly managed by his brothers and he didn't have the proper mentality. Had he stayed at Arsenal under Wenger things would have been a lot different. Off topic but Wenger is the best manager in the world at taking players who already have a great footballing education and making them better. But he is not great at educating players and then bringing them thought. Which player has received his education at Arsenal and went on to be a great player here? I'd say only Clichy thus far. |

United 2-0 Malaysia, Owen, Mechada. Owen is looking very good and has a strong character which is only a plus point. Scholes and Berbatov had neat cameos whilst Rooney was getting angry. |

Yes but he is hardly playing decent opposition and once the premierleague season begins he will be stuck on the bench. |

A goal from Stephen Ireland in the last minute of the first half gave Manchester City a 1-0 win over a lively Kaizer Chiefs side in the Vodacom Challenge. Kaizer Chiefs took on Manchester City in the second game of the Vodacom Challenge tonight at the ABSA Stadium in Durban. After the Citizens had lost to Orlando Pirates in the opening encounter, they were keen to get their preparations back on track with a win against the Amakhosi. Chiefs had different ideas however, and they went into the match with a mission to repeat their rivals feat against the English Premier League side. A few weeks ago a second string Chiefs held the Iranian national team to a 0-0 draw in a friendly played at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein in a performance where Amakhosi showed plenty of enterprise and character. The weekend before that Chiefs won the Premier Cup, beating PSL champions SuperSport United on the way to the title. Man City have been active on the market this summer, acquiring the services of some talented players in the form on Gareth Barry, Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor, and it has given them a boost ahead of this tournament. First Half The game began in Durban in front of a packed crowd, with City taking the kick off and moving straight into attack, but nothing came of their early effort. Chiefs had their first attack in the second minute, as Mathebula hit a long range strike which flew just over Taylor’s goal. Manchester City were aggressive in the midfield, with De Jong using muscle to dictate the play in the early minutes. In the 5th minute the Citizens came close to a strike on goal, with Ireland wriggling away from two challenges in the box before his shot was blocked by the onrushing Sweswe. The Chiefs defender wasted a chance a few minutes later as a cross was floated into the area and found Sweswe on his own, but his volley went wide of the target. In the 11th minute a free kick for Manchester City found the head of McGivern, but he could not direct the ball in the right direction. Chiefs were playing a confident game, but they were struggling to break down the City defence, and a few long range efforts was the result of frustrated attacks. In the 18th minute Ireland broke through the Chiefs defence, but a one on one with Bafana keeper Khune went the way of the number one, and Man City won a corner. In the 25th minute Masango did well to intercept the ball in midfield before turning and shooting at goal, but his effort was disappointing and went wide of Taylor’s goal. A few minutes later Chiefs were on the attack once again, but Motaung’s fall ball left Nale flat footed in the box and City cleared their lines. On the half hour mark a through ball from Caicedo found Barry on the run, but his shot could not beat Khune between the posts. A quick counter attack saw the best attacking move of the match for the South African side, as a cross from the left wing was struck into the side netting by Motaung Junior. Chiefs continued to threaten with speedy counter attacks, and in the 36th minute Taylor was taken by surprise as Masenamala unleashed a shot from distance, with the off balance keeper punching the ball to safety. With five minutes remaining a dangerous cross was sent into the Amakhosi area, but Khune’s acrobatic dive allowed him to catch the ball and keep the score goalless. In the last few minutes Bridge found some space and struck a great long range shot, but his effort went just wide of Khune’s post and after a few more minutes of attacking play from both sides, Manchester City found the breakthrough, as a quick run and cross from Ethuhu found Ireland running into the box to knock the ball past Khune for a 1-0 lead. Second Half In the second half of the game Shaun Wright-Phillips took the captain’s armband from goal scorer Ireland, and Chiefs were quickly pushing forward looking for the equaliser against the Citizens. In the 49th minute Chiefs won a free kick a few metres from the Man City box, and Mathebula’s strike nearly caught the city defence napping, before another shot from the same player a few minutes later required a good save from Taylor. Benjani was introduced to the game in place of Caicedo for the English side, while new Chiefs signing Yende entered the pitch for the Amakhosi for Nale. The men in gold and black were determined to get back into the game, but they struggled to find gaps in the Manchester City defence to exploit. In the 63rd minute Barry left the pitch, and Vidal replaced him. Mathebula did well for Chiefs down the flank, running up and down the wing while creating opportunities for his team mates. Dladla was soon introduced, with the home side hoping that fresh legs would allow them to find the goal to level matters. In the 66th minute Petrov unleashed a cunning strike, with the goal speeding invitingly past the Chiefs area, as Khune ushered the shot wide for a goal kick. A few minutes later a cross found Wright-Phillips at the far post, but his acrobatic finish sent the ball wide disappointingly. Musona was brought on to replace Masango while Garrido took the place of the hard working Bridge, and the fans grew louder in the hopes that they could spur on a come back from their South African heroes. Chiefs’ play was over elaborate at times, when the simple pass and run may have been a better option to use, but few chances fell the way of either side as the game approached a close. In the 81st minute Chiefs had a perfect opportunity to equalise, but great work from Nengomasha allowed the captain to find Motaung in the box and with only Taylor to beat he shot just wide of the post. As time began to run out, Chiefs pushed forward in the hopes of finding a last minute goal, as a good volley from Sweswe came agonizingly close to finding the back of the net. A barrage of shots from the South African side summed up a match that saw poor finishing from Chiefs to blame for a 1-0 loss to an improving Manchester City side. With two minutes remaining, Ethuhu dribbled past Khune in the box before inexplicably blasting his shot wide and over the target. The game winded down and after a few minutes of extra time, the game ended with the Citizens victorious. KAIZER CHIEFS 0–1 MANCHESTER CITY GOALS: Ireland (Chiefs) Starting Lineups: KAIZER CHIEFS: Khune, Mmbooi, Sweswe, Nengomasha, Nahayo, Masenamala, Masango, Ntuka, Nale, Mathebula, Motaung. MANCHESTER CITY: Taylor, Zabaleta, Bridge, Mee, McGivern, De Jong, Ireland, Barry, Wright-Phillips, Caicedo, Ethuhu. |
