1. How good is Landon Donovan? He has scored 41 international goals in 113 caps for the USA, though most were against the likes of Panama and Cuba, with the odd goal against Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Sweden, Ecuardor, Poland and Denmark. He also has 37 assists for the USA, making him the all-time leading assist maker for USA. For LA Galaxy he has scored 58 goals in 107 domestic games, and has since moved on loan to Bayern Munich, though struggled to make an impact in this spell. So anyway, what do you make of him? He's only 27. 2. The USA are known to be a poor footballing nation, but is this mainly down to the lack of interest in the country? If young people were brought up with football in the US, do you think they'd be a major force? Will this ever happen? |

To answer question number 2, many youths play football but when they reach their teens and high school they switch to the traditional American sports. None of our best athletes play football past 13 years old. We have the best athletes on the planet, so if we actually had good coaching at a young age and kept the best in the sport, we'd be a powerhouse. But that will never happen IMO, so its a moot point. For example, if Henry grew up in the US he'd probably be a wide receiver on some NFL team. |

Bit of a shame really, do Yanks generally not like watching football or aren't they exposed enough to it? |

Both Scholes. Interest is increasing, but with the NFL and NBA as popular as they are, football will never be the big thing here. |

They are fucked in the head. I hear baseball players saying watching football is like paint drying. Ever sat through a baseball game? Thing is they all play it as kids an then they switch sports. Not that I think theres even good coaching for kids soccer. Many of them stiill think you can have "plays" etc in football. Edited by Cull58, Jun 28 2009, 07:30 PM.

DaG, a little off-topic, but what's so big about American football? I mean how the college system because do people get scholarships or something so that they can play college American football. Is it even a big thing because it would be the equivalent of England school boys here?

Yeah, scholarships are a very big thing in American footy. There are barely any for football (soccer). College football racks in so much money, so Universities allot most of their money to American football programs. And Cull, its all about understanding the game. Yanks generally think footy is boring because they don't understand it. I understand baseball so well and fucking love playing it. |

I think the Yanks will be a bit of a force in the future. The country is filled with incredible athletes and it's only a matter of time before they get really good at football. Landon Donovon is alright, would do alright in the PL for a team like Fulahm or Blackburn etc. |

1. Hard to say I dont often watch USA games or La Galaxy hes looked good in the tourny. 2. Of course they could be a force they have a huge population and often do very well at sports. They also have a lot of financial power so if the intrest was there they could be a force. My friends going to uni in America on a football(soccer) scholarship. |

I know what you mean by the Yanks and Canadians not thinking football is interesting. I was over there and some bloke was saying how boring it was, I could accept it just wasn't his thing but when he said he'd much rather watch Daytona racing: 200 laps around around a big oval track, well that just took the biscuit.

The coaching for the most part is abysmal to be honest. I watched this U14 team train the other day and it was a fucking disgrace. |
