Gunners boss Arsene Wenger believes he is now close to -pulling off one of the transfer coups of the summer and -winning the race to sign the Bayern Munich winger.

Until the last couple of weeks Ribery, 26, was destined for one of Europes giants with Man United, Barcelona and Real Madrid all in the hunt.

But despite the huge interest and several offers of around £30m, Bayern stubbornly refused to sell for anything less than £40m.

And that suddenly left Arsenal in pole position, even though Wenger has long made it clear he cannot compete with his rivals when it comes to buying the biggest names in the game.Ü

Yet an offer of £30m plus £10m-rated Danish hitman Nicklas Bendtner to make up the difference appears to have struck a chord with new Bayern coach Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman has made it clear he does not want unsettled players at the club Ò and reckons that ArsenalÌs cash-and-player deal represents good business for the Bundesliga boys.

Manchester City are the only other club still monitoring developments but Ribery has told the big-spending Premier League outfit he wants Champions League football next term.

It is that, combined with the strong French connection at the Emirates, which is convincing Ribery his future lies with the north London club.

Wenger has been desperate to keep the negotiations under wraps to avoid alerting United or Barca.

A four-year trophy drought, their poor showing in the Premier League last term and the need to prove to Cesc Fabregas and Co they will be challenging for the top honoursÜ means that Arsenal mean business.

And our source close to ArsenalÌs top brass confirmed: ÏRibery was on the agenda at a recent board meeting and it could even be a done deal by now. Were very optimistic.

He is a very good player overrated by MANY but still with £30m we could make our squad better than just buying him. Its now a squad game as I am sure you know.

Would love this to happen. We'd have the best wings in the world, and I actually think this story is real. Wenger is feeling the pressure folks, he needs to deliver.

Let's see.

Sorry Goonie, but that's bollocks IMO. If you ever have a chance to sign one of the top 10 players in the world, especially when it will infinitely improve our weakest point, the wings.

Also, your point about the squad makes no sense IMO. We have squad players up the yin yang, we don;t have a good enough first 11. Nasri, Walcott, Song, Bendtner, etc should all be coming off the bench right now. Adding Ribery would make us a lot stronger.

First of all he is overrated always has been, he is a very good player but when you see how highly a lot rate him its just madness. He would not improve us byt the ammount you are making out either imo, he would be an improvment but £30m to our first 11 with 2 buys would be better. The wings is not our weakest point. Goalkeeper and CB we are much more weak than we are on the wings.

Song shouldn't be anywhere near our bench not even anywhere near our squad unless its back up as a CB. He is terrible. I think the £30m would go to our first XI but it would go to improving it a lot more than an Ribery would but 2 positions rather than one.

For starters Denilson is quality and unless we can get in a good CM he should start but he is young and should be used in squad rotation for a season ot two imo. So we could make an improvement there becuase if Cesc or Denilson is out then there is no way Diaby or Song are good enough. We have more depth in wide area's than we do CM. As for CB we need improvements, I hope the new guy will come straight in and do well but I still think we should sell Toure and buy another CB.

He is rated as the 3rd best winger behind Messi and Ronaldo, and rightly so. Not overrated at all.

Depth in the wide areas? We have ONE, yes, ONE reliable wide player.

As for the central defense issue, I originally wanted 2 in as well, mostly because I thought Gallas was off. But it looks like he will stay, so 1 CB and 1 winger is good. Gallas is world class on his day, and once the captaincy was taken off he was fucking brilliant.

By so many he is overrated I don't want us wasting £40m for him when it could be spent a lot better.

More so than in CM. We have NO, yes, NO relable keepers. We had No reliable CB's last season. Other than Denilson last season we have No relable CM's. All either injured or crap. Nasri is not as bad as you have made him out to be, he is a good wide player. Walcott is another who is not as bad as you make him out to be imo. We maybe could do with another wide player but not before a CB.

Assuming Messi and especially Ronaldo are more of forweards, Ribery is quite possibly the best winger in the world. 2nd best at the very worst. He's class.

Why do people doubt Benzema making it at a big club? If you look at all the reasons I bet more than half can be applied to Ribery. I don't doubt either could make it at a big club btw but I doubt either would make the impact people expect.
