![]() The former Arsenal star was being lined up for a switch to St Andrews... Birmingham City have been one of the summer transfer window's busiest sides so far, signing a clutch of players, including Ecuadorean international Christian Benitez, Roger Johnson from Cardiff City and highly-rated young goalkeeper Joe Hart on loan from Manchester City. Co-owner David Sullivan revealed today that the club were looking for further additions to manager Alex McLeish's squad, and it has emerged this evening that one of their targets was reportedly Inter's veteran midfielder Patrick Vieira, the former Arsenal skipper who was a World Cup winner with France in 1998. Blues fans have been speculating intensely as to the identity of the "£90,000 a week man" who has been rumoured to be attracting the interest of the club, and The Birmingham Mail is now reporting that the player concerned is Vieira. However, the midfielder, who is keen for regular football after a season in Italy disrupted by injury, has reportedly turned down two advances from the Blues, one six weeks ago and one last week, depite the West Midlanders being perfectly amenable to his huge wage demands. The Mail reports that McLeish has now drawn a line under the matter, with the player not being regarded as a priority target, but rather a 'special bonus' player, whose acquisition would have provided some icing on the cake of the Blues' transfer dealings this summer Edited by Homer, Jun 27 2009, 02:38 AM.

He's past it now anyway, would have been disappointing to see a legend not performing the way he used to. |
