Mike Riley has been announced as the successor to Keith Hackett as the general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials, when Hackett retires in January.

Hackett will now spend the next six months overseeing the handover of the position to Riley, who will then cease to be an active referee.

The 44-year-old Leeds-born accountant has been a referee for 20 years, with 13 of those spent in the Premier League.

"Mike brings a wealth of top-class refereeing experience to the role in addition to his business experience, in both the public and private sectors, which will stand him in good stead," Peter Heard, the chairman of the PGMO is reported by The Daily Mail as saying.
"We are very confident that he will continue to move the PGMO forward and successfully manage and develop professional match officials at this level."

"I would like to pay tribute to the progress the PGMO has made under the leadership of Keith Hackett, who has overseen the professionalisation of top-flight referees in this country and raised the standards of all aspects of officiating - from training and development to match performance."

Hull City manger Phil Brown was yesterday fined £2,500 for his comments abut Riley in the wake of the Tigers' exit from the FA Cup in March.

He hasn't got a strong enough personality, he looks like a new-born chick.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart
