SIR ALEX FERGUSON is planning an audacious raid on Liverpool for Kop striking hero Fernando Torres.

Armed with the £80 million windfall from Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid, the Manchester United boss is determined to make his own impact in a transfer market which is becoming bloated with money from the big clubs.

Liverpool hitman Torres is the shock target, as Sir Alex knows that a bid of around £40m would have to be seriously considered by United’s title rivals who have severe cash problems.

If Ferguson could pull off the coup, it would be a slap in the face for Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who was involved in a war of words with the Scot during the second half of the season.

Liverpool, who paid £20m to bring Torres from Atletico Madrid, would fight tooth and nail to hang on to the Spaniard but a British transfer record offer would give the Anfield boardroom serious food for thought.

In the meantime, Ferguson will pursue what could turn out to be more realistic targets – Lyon’s French striker Karim Benzema, Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o, Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero, Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery and Valencia’s David Silva.

A £20m deal to take Wigan’s wide right sided player Antonio Valencia to Old Trafford will be finalised in the next few days.

United believe they will lose Carlos Tevez to neighbours Manchester City but are more confident of fighting off the interest in unsettled defender Nemanja Vidic, who is being monitored by Barcelona and AC Milan.

Just saw that on SSN. I think Torres would relish playing at a big club, but whether Liverpool would sell him remains to be seen...

Won't happen. Give me Ribery, Hamsik and Huntelaar and I will be delighted.

Swap Tevez for Torres :dribble:

Then we'd see Scholes' opinion on the man change...

El Nino on LFC: "This club has it all: the history, the prestige, the fans, the organisation. It's a big responsibility to give the fans here the success they desire, but the challenge is always exhilarating and this is why I was delighted to sign a new contract, I have no intention of leaving Liverpool now or in the future..my future is to be shared with Liverpool and there fans"

Liverpool might have to sell and trust me, Rafa will not be in charge of accepting/declining the deal. I don't think it'll happen though due to Torres' love for Livepool.

It'd never happen, and thank God. He'd obviously improve us as he's ideal for the centre-forward role but I can't stand him or his playing style.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

Exactly. Which means if United come in with a mega offer, Rafa will be leaving also.

What players and managers say is rarely true. Ronaldo stated on numerous occasions that he'll remin at Old Trafford for next season. Now he's off to Madrid. We never know whats going on behind the scenes.
