Sunderland fans have decided to to express their delight at the relegation of their bitter local rivals Newcastle United to next season's Championship in a rather unusual way. BBC News reports that a pair of road signs have appeared in the North East that mock the Magpies' plight in a rather pointed way. One, on a road leading from Newcastle to Sunderland, reads "The Stadium of Light, the North East's only Premier League stadium." Another, on the A184, has an arrow pointing towards Newcastle and reads, "Sid James' Park, the biggest stadium in the 'Fizzy Pop' league," Sid James, of course, was a British comic actor famed for his roles in knockabout, bawdy comedies such as the 'Carry On' series of films, whilst a large American soft drinks manufacturer sponsors the Championship. The signs are affixed to old posts that no longer bear useful road signs, and the stunt was unveiled via the website Youtube. Laughing Mackems also reportedly swamped their rivals with bogus bids by email for the club when Mike Ashley announced that the St James' Park outfit was once again up for sale at the end of the season. Newcastle fan John Monaghan, 35, of Heaton, told the BBC,"They are entitled to laugh, after all, we laughed at them when they were relegated in 2003 and then again in 2006. "But it's hard to find anything very funny at the moment if you're a Newcastle fan." |

Got no problem with it really, everyone's entitled to enjoy it when their rivals go down, we all laughed at the mackems when it went horribly wrong for them (so many times lol) and it's all just banter, but they have dragged it on for quite a while now. |

It means so much to me and every time I hear a joke Newcastle related I laugh. I'm getting a great deal of satisfaction at the moment and I hope it continues throughout the season. What you don't get is the real life reaction of a geordie... it's priceless mate. |

Yeah, its showing how small we have been compared to the scum in the last 15 years or so, the way some fans are acting, some would have been happy to see us go down last season as long as the mags had followed us. RTG is sad, like you say, half the threads are about the scum, like posting the new prem table just because newcastle aint in it...jeez... We've had our two weeks of fun, time to start thinking about our own club, because if we dont start signing a few players, we'll be following the mags next season. |

Now we have a solid determined manager in charge we'd finish well clear of Stoke, Hull, Wolves, Birmingham and Burnley without signing any players lol. |
