He wont bring in any top names this summer and he is always making excuses saying the club is still short in its development etc etc.

Top names will come this summer and we will push for top 4 and get it too if others above us fail enough. Hughes or not, we'll make it.

He said its doubtful Man City would spend a huge fee on a big player and that he wants to bring in quality players at the same level as Barry.

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is refusing to predict where he expects the club to finish next season.

With Gareth Barry already signed and a host of additional new faces - possibly including Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Joleon Lescott - set to arrive at Eastlands this summer, these are exciting times for City fans.

Supporters are eagerly awaiting confirmation of the new Premier League fixtures next Wednesday, believing next season could be one to remember.

Yet, City chairman Khaldoon-al-Mubarak has merely declared a desire to break into the top six. And Hughes is not even prepared to go that far.

Mindful of football's vagaries and how often misfortune can deal an unexpected blow, he just wants to be challenging the club's best Premier League finish of eighth before kicking on during the final weeks of the campaign.

"We are looking at realistic targets," said Hughes.

"We are not going to box ourselves in and say we will definitely do something because football is a fickle sport and things can come crashing down.

"But if we get the players we are looking to get in this window, the ambition will be to more successful than this club has ever been in the Premier League.

"If we can achieve that, towards the end of the season there may be opportunities to kick on."

While Hughes is refusing to discuss specific targets, he is believed to be attempting to tie up the arrival of Santa Cruz from Blackburn.

Although he previously indicated interest had cooled in his former player, Hughes is thought to have had a change of heart given his dire need for a line-leader among his forwards as Felipe Caicedo is not thought to be experienced enough for the job.

A much-touted move for Carlos Tevez would bring accusations of being top heavy with strikers, so Hughes is keen to bring in some defenders as well.

City seem set to make a move for Lescott once the England star returns from his holidays, with further additions not being ruled out depending on the success Hughes has in landing his main targets.

"It is fair to say we are looking to address some areas of the team," said Hughes.

"Getting players in early was part of our plan and we are quite happy at how the window is developing."

Lescott would be a good buy, RSC would be OK.

Can't really say, Alex Ferguson didn't set the world alight during his first few years at Man United and he hasn't done too badly since then has he? Give Hughes some time.
