HARRY REDKNAPP is ready to launch a massive Spurs clearout - with up to FOURTEEN players facing the chop. The Tottenham boss thinks the squad he inherited from Juande Ramos needs a major overhaul before they can seriously challenge for a Champions League place. And though he has been promised further money for summer signings, he still wants rid of the dead wood to go into the new season with a leaner, more competitive group of players. Among the high-profile stars on Redknapp's hit-list are right winger David Bentley and strikers Roman Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent. The trio cost the club a combined £47.8million in the past two years. Others squad players who are surplus to requirements include Gareth Bale, Didier Zokora, Giovani Dos Santos, Ricardo Rocha, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Gilberto. Redknapp could also listen to offers for Jermaine Jenas, Tom Huddlestone, Jamie O'Hara, Chris Gunter and Pascal Chimbonda. Spurs spent £50.25m on Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane, Wilson Palacios and Carlo Cudicini in January. And they have blown an incredible £180m on new signings in the last two years, offset by £95m of sales. Chairman Daniel Levy has been encouraged by the way Redknapp transformed a team which was bottom of the Premier League when he took over from Ramos in October to finish the season just one place away from Europe. Now the manager has convinced him that a top-six finish is definitely achievable next season - with the right investment during the summer. Redknapp is still trying to persuade Real Madrid star Ruud van Nistelrooy to return to England three years after leaving Manchester United. Spurs would have to break their strict wage structure to lure the veteran striker to White Hart Lane and the club have adopted a recent policy of signing younger players with a high resale value. Van Nistelrooy, 32, has not played since undergoing a serious knee operation last November. But Redknapp believes landing the prolific Holland ace for a cut-price fee would be a massive coup for the club - and allow him to cash in on Pavlyuchenko and Bent. Van Nistelrooy remains unconvinced and is tempted to see out the final year of his £100,000-a-week contract at the Bernabeu despite being told he can leave. Redknapp is also determined to rival Manchester City for the signature of £10m-rated Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz and will also join the scramble for Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko. The Spurs directors fly to Spain on a double mission today - to try and persuade Seville to pay £8m for Zokora and to settle the longrunning dispute over Ramos. The La Liga side insist the manager was 'poached' as Ramos was pictured in a Spanish hotel with Spurs officials more than two months before he succeeded the sacked Martin Jol. Seville have been attempting to claim almost £3m in compensation but it now seems that president Jose Maria del Nido is ready to ignore the matter if Spurs accept his price for midfielder Zokora, 28. A Seville source said: "We are ready for a positive solution." |

Spurs need a clear-out, and I think have learned alot from selling Defoe and Keane, only to bring them back. I think, depending on who they sign, they can be a strong force next season, and along with Man City I can see Villa/Everton slipping. From a selfish perspective Wenger can see the improvements also, having commented on Man City in particular, and with the scare we had last season earlier on, I can see him selling wank stains like Ade and Gallas and perhaps RvP who is injury prone too, and buying in more quality. He has finally realised our defence needs a shake up also.... I am really looking forward to next season, should be very interesting who comes out smelling of roses. |
