Therein lies your lack of understanding about why Barca will win the league. Football is about more than the front men Homer. |

You had your greatest season ever so good luck next season and let battle commence Let's Face It - Cristiano Ronaldo Is Irreplaceable At Manchester United The reaction to the unbelievable saga finally ending has been vitriolic, but it's no use now denying what CR7 has meant and still means to the club, As we speak, non-Manchester United fans (in the UK, anyway) are celebrating just as hard as Real Madrid followers at the news that Cristiano Ronaldo is all set to leave Old Trafford – and that’s largely because one of the most tedious and drawn-out transfer sagas of the modern era has finally come to an end. Still, even the most anti-United among us must admit that part of that joy is due to the fact the best club in England is losing its star attraction. Sir Alex Ferguson will have an extra £80 million to spend once the deal is sealed, and nobody can deny that such income will go a long way towards easing the pain of the Portuguese winker’s exit – there’s two £40 million signings straight off the bat, if the Scot chooses to take such a course (and the Glazers don't take some towards paying off their debt). This is the positive spin a big chunk of the Manc fans will be pushing. Some will say it was inevitable since last summer and express their relief that the whole thing is finally sorted – for surely it is better to get rid of a player that clearly does not want to stay, right? Others may even go as far as to suggest that the Red Devils will be better off without ‘CR7’. He’s greedy, arrogant, deceitful, conniving and overall far too soap-star-looking to play for Salford’s greatest establishment, they’ll say; as big-headed as he is brilliant, and just another example of Fergie’s no-tolerance policy towards those who believe they are untouchable. So, with money to blow and their right flank a superstar short, it’s simply a matter of replacing Ronaldo, isn’t it? Just as the Madeira-born magician made the Stretford End faithful forget David Beckham, surely the man who inherits the No. 7 jersey will do the same? Unfortunately for the Premier League champs, it ain’t that simple. The thing is, the Ronaldo of the last three years has been something else. On a bad day, he’ll win you a game; on a good day, he’ll do so in such a manner that will leave his opponents considering retirement at half-time. He’ll beat men with pace, humiliate entire defences with his skill, and murder teams with his unholy knack for finding the net. The truth is, England hadn’t seen that sort of explosive genius from a winger since John Barnes was at the peak of his Liverpool powers in the late 1980s. And if ‘Digger’ was a revelation, then Ronnie has been the revolution, leading United back to the very top of the pile and reminding everyone that dribble wizards can kick arse in a division famed for its focus on tempo over technique. You can’t just buy that sort of impact. Sure, you can bring in players who might be capable of making similar waves, but there is absolutely no guarantee that a Franck Ribery or a Karim Benzema will be able to handle it. Just as Fergie found out with Juan Sebastian Veron (and, to some extent, with Dimitar Berbatov and Nani), a lofty fee is no marker for success. Ronaldo’s role at Old Trafford is – well, was – a unique one, fashioned specifically to play to his strengths. Carlos Queiroz, Ferguson’s right-hand man between 2004 and 2008, was the tactical mastermind behind the present-day United setup, easing out the tried but true 4-4-2 that had served the club so well to make way for a flexible 4-3-3 – and it is largely thanks to this slight but significant shift in philosophy that Ronaldo has become arguably the best player on the planet, certainly in an all-round attacking sense, at the very least. It's not to suggest that United can't go on and be a better team without him. They have before and they can again, even if it does take a measure of time and re-shaping. But in this instance, they would have been far better keeping their No. 7 at Old Trafford. With exiles gone by, that may not have been the case. Nevertheless, as is true with many star players, Ronaldo's status within the United team has forced other, almost equally prodigious talents to sacrifice their natural game – most particularly in the case of one Wayne Rooney. Ronaldo exploded after Ruud van Nistelrooy’s exit, and the same could certainly happen with ‘Roo’ in this instance. We must remember that, though Ronaldo did commit the cardinal sin of saying he would stay several times this season, this was a player who openly expressed his desire to leave the club but was talked out of it by his boss. Maybe that was Fergie's mistake, and maybe that made this messy divorce all the more inevitable. No player in the world can do for the club what CR7 has, and the comparisons to George Best are not undeserved. He's unlikely to ever be held in the same regard due to the nature of his departure, but nobody can dispute just how important he has been – a point which will be made painfully clear should the club fail to cope properly with his departure. |

Real Madrid are an embarrasment. They spent more on Kaka alone than our entire CL WINNING starting XI.

I'm not going to argue about it, I'm just going to point out to anyone that thinks Kaka's was - fleetingly - a world record is wrong. What currency was the Zidane transfer done in? Euros. What currency was the Kaka transfer done in? Euros. Therefore what currency shall we use to compare them? Euros. Who's was higher in Euros? Zidane. Therefore did Kaka's transfer break the world record? No. |
