After watching one of Barcelona's Champions League final heroes, Samuel Eto'o, evade Manchester United's defence before stroking the ball home to break the deadlock in Wednesday evening's showdown, Manchester City are preparing to launch a mega-money offer in order to convince the recently-crowned European Cup winners to part company with the Cameroonian hotshot.

Spanish newspaper Marca claims that, despite the recent murmurs emanating from Eastlands that the club will be spending wisely this summer, City are keen on proven match-winning striker Eto'o and are preparing concrete bid.

Eto'o has been a consistent big-game player for the Catalan club and at 28-years-old is still considered to be in the midst of his peak years as a footballer. However, Barca may be willing to do business as the former Mallorca ace has just one year left on his current contract. Eto'o, though, is reported to be happy at Camp Nou.

If the City are to fail in their attempt to bring him to the north west of England then they may be tempted to move for Manchester United's on-loan Argentine star, Carlos Tevez.

I edited the title.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

KEEP it in here Homer, favourite this thread :)

MANCHESTER CITY believe they have won a £42million race for Carlos Tevez and Gareth Barry.
The richest club in the world are ready to rubber-stamp a £32m deal to steal Tevez away from city rivals United. And they will offer £10m-rated Barry £90,000 a week to see off Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs.

The move for Argentinian striker Tevez, 25, also blows Liverpool and Chelsea out of the chase with City happy to meet Kia Joorabchian's £32m asking price.

Liverpool's bid for the former West Ham forward was the lowest offer received. Boss Mark Hughes will also pay Tevez nearly £140,000 a week in a four-year deal.

Joorabchian will have one final meeting with Old Trafford chiefs this week to find out whether Sir Alex Ferguson sees Tevez as anything more than a bit-part player.

Those assurances are unlikely - leaving the way clear for City.

Hughes is in the Middle East to talk about transfer targets with City's Abu Dhabi owners and has made it clear he sees Tevez as vital to the club.

City are much further down the road with Tevez than Barry. But they are confident their financial clout will get them the Aston Villa captain.

Liverpool felt they were in pole position after their abortive attempt to land Barry, 28, last summer.

But the Reds are unable to match the Arabs' vast wealth.Barry could yet decide he values Champions League football over money but Eastlands officials are confident of getting their man.

Mark Hughes has made it clear he will be shopping for players of real quality for his Manchester City Football Club squad when the transfer window opens.

Backed by the mega-rich Abu Dhabi United Group, Hughes is looking to make more signings in the same quality of Robinho, who arrived from Real Madrid in a £32.5million deal last summer.

"What we intend to do this summer is add real quality to the first team and some depth that will make the squad better as a whole,” he told the Manchester Evening News.

"We are looking to bring in quality at the top end. It is difficult to put a number on how many players might come, but I have every expectation that I will be bringing good players to the club.”

He might be dissapointed then, because real quality is hard to come by- especially without any realistic prospect of CL football for the next 3 years.

In all fairness Ant, You certainly won't be in the CL next season, I think it's unlikely you will be in the CL in 2010/11 and possible that you will be in it the season after but I think it'll be the season after that, 2012/13 by the time City reach the 'promised land'.

So Seven's claim is far from bitter, it's realistic and the best you can realistically hope for is CL football in 2011/12. I bet you won't get it any sooner, I would put all my money on it, I'm that sure..... Unless Arsenal completely fold because you don't get to Utd's, Chelsea's and Liverpool's level without building up to it, that's just a fact.

Where is the bitterness? Its cold rationality, granted, and such things may not be to your taste but you have to be realistic. I could say Man Utd would be in the next 5 CL finals and win the next 5 EPL's but neither will happen. Progress is whats required at City and that doesn't happen in 5 minutes. I think you mistake City's position for Chelsea's in the 1st year of Abramhovic.

The level at the top has risen since and it's next to impossible for a team to just soar to those heights in 1-2 seasons, with or without money. It takes time, Ant thinks City will just qualify for the CL and challenge for titles in the next 2 years, he will be dissapointed, maybe after next season he'll realise it's just not that easy. I'd be amazed if City finished in the top 4 next season and very surprised if they did it in 2010/11.

I'm not confident of us finishing top 4 next season, but it's within realms of possibility. The season after however we WILL finish top 4, I can guarantee. Our owners will settle for nothing less.

It's not got anything to do with the owners targets though Ant. What happens if Hughes has City in 7th place in the 2010/11 season, will he get sacked and if so, do you think a new manager will come in, apply his methods and things will just pick up and City will win 90% of their games and qualify for the CL! It would lessen their chances for that season if anything. We will have to see how City do this coming season to determine whether they have a good chance of breaking into the top 4. But as I said, the owners expectation has nothing to do with it, it's all done on the pitch, will Hughes get a team with several new signings to gel and guide them to CL football, will the players adjust to each other and become a team and not just a group of class players? These are the things that will make City a force or not.

Abramovich expects title challenges and CL glory every season, does it get him anywhere? Does sacking a manager every season help? Real Madrid do the same in order to get European glory, does their presidents aspirations guarantee them any success? The answer is very simple, no.

City will have a chance in 2010/11 but there's four teams ahead of you who are already at or near the level your lot are working towards, you will need them to move backwards, stay where they are, or have an astronomical rise in quality as a team to finish top 4. You will have a chance though but I wouldn't think it's a sure-fire bet.
