Aston Villa captain Martin Laursen has called time on his playing career due to injury.

The Danish defender, who has not played since January, has announced that he will be retiring from football with immediate effect.

He has been plagued by knee problems for many years and the latest setback left him facing a decision about whether to carry on.

Laursen could have undergone another major operation - this time on his right knee - in an attempt to return to action but he has instead opted to hang up his boots.

The 31-year-old's retirement will leave a huge void to fill in the Villa defence as he has been one of the club's most consistent performers in recent seasons.

He moved to Villa Park from AC Milan in 2004 and went on to establish himself as one of the strongest centre-backs in the Premier League.

Big loss for Villa. He will undoubtedly be very hard to replace.

Massive shame. Good luck to him.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

:tremble: poor bloke. Ant, regardless of whether he's overrated or not, it's still a massive shame that any footballer's career should be curtailed by injury wouldn't you say?

Yeah it's harsh, not nice to have to retire, but I doubt he is too unhappy. He's obviously lost the love for the game otherwise he'd keep battling on, at only 30 years of age you have plenty of years to recover and as a defender you can easily carry on until 35.

Unlucky :tremble: he is by far the best defender Villa have and I actually considered him one opf the leagues top CB's so for him to retire at 31 is a terrible blow. :( Good luck to him.

Martin Laursen has spoken of his "sadness" at quitting football - but also his tremendous pride at captaining Villa.

Laursen revealed he has come to terms with the fact he will never play again - after the initial devastation.

But he said he leaves the game with many "special" memories of leading out the claret and blue troops.

He told AVTV: "It's a sad and strange day. It's strange to sit down and talk about quitting the game. Less than five months ago I was flying. I was feeling really good and everything was going great for me. Now I can't play football anymore. It's strange, weird, sad and frustrating.

"It's been a while and I am now getting used to the thought that that's the way it is - that's life. But at the start I was very upset. It was very difficult for me.

"But now, I feel pretty relaxed and able to say 'that's life' and mean it.

"I can be happy with my career - especially the last two years here with Villa. That's been amazing for me. I have enjoyed my football the most over the last couple of seasons.

"I wanted that to continue because I was playing well and I felt wonderful about my game.

"The club was - and is - moving in the right direction and I was captain.

"To be skipper this season meant a lot. It was a real honour - a special privilege.

"To be captain of Aston Villa - a big, big club - was tremendous. I enjoyed it so much."
