Temper tantrums, hissy fits and stroppy sulks might sound like terms to describe any regular day at a local nursery school, but they can also be applied to the reaction of some professional footballers who respond badly to being substituted.

The ignominy of being hooked by a manager, whether for personal good or for the benefit of the team, appears to sit poorly with some grown men, who proceed to behaviour like a toddler who has been told it is time for bed.

And below we highlight 10 players who have thrown their toys out of the pram when prevented from completing 90 minutes for their respective sides, starting with the man who has sparked recent debate.

Cristiano Ronaldo - Man United v Man City, 2009
Last Sunday, United moved to the brink of equalling Liverpool's record of 18 top-flight titles after a comfortable victory over Manchester derby rivals City, but Ronaldo managed to supply a bigger subject of discussion.

As United strolled to a 2-0 win over their neighbours at Old Trafford, and with the UEFA Champions League final to come, boss Sir Alex Ferguson opted to rest one of his main assets and replaced Ronaldo with veteran Paul Scholes on 58 minutes.

This caused great anger in the 2008 World Footballer of the Year and Ballon d'Or winner, who threw a training top to the ground and continued to shake his head while mouthing his displeasure under the nose of Ferguson and the world's media.

Some have suggested that Cristiano 'there's no I in team' Ronaldo was annoyed at missing out on the opportunity to add to his goals tally in the race for this season's top-scorer award.

However, others have implied that the huff was a calculated attempt to ostracise Ferguson as Real Madrid target Ronaldo, never usually one to shy away from a Kodak moment, allegedly dreams of walking along the Paseo de la Castellana with a belly full of paella next season.

This Top 10 would not dream of agreeing with either theory as preparations begin for another thrilling summer of 'Ronaldo to the Bernabeu' speculation stories.

Scott McDonald - Celtic v Motherwell, 2008
Celtic slumped to a surprise 1-0 defeat to 10-man Motherwell at Parkhead in April last season, but manager Gordon Strachan's decision to substitute star striker McDonald caused the greater controversy.

With the Bhoys trailing to Simon Lappin's goal and the clock ticking to 60 minutes in Glasgow, Strachan chose to introduce Georgios Samaras at the expense of top scorer McDonald.

The fiery Australia international - who had at that time netted on 26 occasions during the campaign - was less than impressed as a dugout seat copped it from his clinical boot, while another training shirt hit the deck. Kitmen must wonder why they bother.

Former Motherwell hero McDonald cooled after the event and Strachan revealed that the player offered an apology.

Lionel Messi - Barcelona v Valencia, 2008
Messi's temper tantrum after being replaced during Barcelona's 4-0 success against Valencia at Camp Nou five months ago has never been officially confirmed, but there is no smoke without fire.

After making way for inexperienced team-mate Pedrito, 2009 World Player of the Year-elect Messi was reported by Catalan-based radio RAC-1 to be livid with manager Pep Guardiola.

According to the Spanish media, the Argentina ace was ready to snub Barcelona's training the morning after the victory, before phone calls to the club built bridges.

However, having arrived for training, it is then said that Messi refused to change into his training attire and spent the session watching a dressing-room television.

Injury therapy and an agreed holiday have both been offered as explanations for the 21-year-old's absence, but the thought of the man from Rosario sat with his feet up, channel-hopping while his team-mates were huffing and puffing is far more amusing.

Robbie Keane - Tottenham v Manchester City, 2008
Keane entered the moody hall of fame in March last year after he was hooked in Tottenham's 2-1 turnaround defeat to City at Eastlands.

The Republic of Ireland captain fired Spurs, who had been dumped out of the Uefa Cup on penalties at PSV Eindhoven earlier in the week, into a first-half lead, but City hit back through Stephen Ireland and Nedum Onuoha.

Keane's misery was compounded in between City's goals as then-manager Juande Ramos decided to end his afternoon when introducing Darren Bent on 67 minutes.

The former Wolves, Coventry, Inter Milan and Leeds forward, who had been substituted in five of his last six starts by ever-popular boss Ramos, could not hide his disappointment as he slung a tracksuit across the dugout and sat with head in hands in front of mightily amused home fans.

At least Keane could have been consoled by the possible post-match scenario of a friend who, with arm around shoulder, said: "Cheer up Robbie. You'll get your dream move to Liverpool in the summer where you'll play 90 minutes in every match..."

Nani - Manchester United v Tottenham, 2009
Although Ronaldo's strop is the one that has grabbed the headlines, Ferguson offered prior notice of his rod of iron rule before the winger's strop.

The United boss demonstrated he is not afraid to break a few eggs in order to make an omelette as he substituted Nani at half-time in the 5-2 win over Tottenham at the end of April.

With the £14million flop signing on the pitch in the opening 45 minutes, United slumped two goals behind to their Old Trafford visitors.

However, with Nani off and Carlos Tevez on, in the second half Ferguson's side came roaring back to win and move a step closer to another Premier League title.

The Portuguese, who has proved a major let down since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2007 as a potential long-term successor to Ryan Giggs, was less than impressed.

Rather than revel in his team-mates' success, the 22-year-old is understood to have left 10 minutes before the final whistle to raise serious doubts over his future.

Strict disciplinarian Ferguson is never impressed by such antics and, with Zoran Tosic expected to emerge in 2009/10, reported Inter Milan target Nani could well be looking for a place to live in Italy this summer.

Geovanni - Hull City v Blackburn, 2009
If there is one thing that is certain in the Premier League, it is that you get kicked when you are down, as Hull City discovered in March's 2-1 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

Following a massively over-achieving start to the season, the wheels were already well and truly falling off when Brazilian star Geovanni reacted angrily to his substitution at the KC Stadium.

In late summer and early autumn, some over-excited tipsters were backing Hull for a place in Europe. But reality has kicked in, and there is nothing like a bit of in-house squabbling to help with the sinking feeling.

With Hull 2-0 down, boss Phil Brown hauled his playmaker off eight minutes after half-time as experienced performer Nick Barmby entered the fray.

The change disgusted Geovanni, who trudged to the bench and took his anger out on a water bottle.

Brown publicly chastised the player and there still appears to be a twitchy under-current as, having had time to cool off, the Tigers boss continues to seem keen to avoid the subject.

Hossam Ghaly - Tottenham v Blackburn, 2007
Ghaly never played for Tottenham again in the wake of his shirt-throwing reaction to a substitution during a 1-1 draw with Blackburn at White Hart Lane.

If there is one manager from the Premier League history books that it would be best to avoid upsetting based upon physical appearance, it would be Martin Jol.

However, Ghaly succeeded in angering the intimidating former Spurs boss sufficiently when being substituted after beginning the meeting with Rovers on the bench.

The Egyptian came on for the injured Steed Malbranque in the 29th minute as Spurs looked for an equaliser to Benni McCarthy's opener.

However, Ghaly endured a shocking, brief evening and was promptly replaced by Keane after only 15 minutes of the second half.

The midfielder was livid and tore his shirt from his back before slinging it in the direction of Jol and leaving the stadium.

Cesc Fabregas - Spain v Bosnia-Herzegovina, 2008
Fabregas shocked his country with a furiously animated response to seeing his number held a loft during last September's 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Despite setting up the only goal of the game, scored by David Villa, the Arsenal captain was hauled off before the end of the clash in Murcia.

The European champions' new boss Vincente del Bosque replaced Fabregas with Liverpool star Xabi Alonso with 25 minutes left to play.

Del Bosque's tactical rethink ensured that the Gunners midfielder continued to hold an unwanted statistic of playing an hour-and-a-half for his country on only five occasions after making 33 starts.

Fabregas insisted that his reaction was nothing to do with an apparent lack of faith from Del Bosque or an inability to become a certainty for his country, claiming it was instead due to his passion as a footballer.

Mido - Egypt v Senegal, 2006
Mido caused a national controversy following his gobsmacking outburst to being substituted in Egypt's 2-1 success against Senegal in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

With the match poised at 1-1 after Ahmed Hassan's penalty was cancelled out by Mamadou Niang, Egypt coach Hassan Shehata decided to go for broke.

In the 79th minute Mido was replaced by current Wigan team-mate Amr Zaki and the striker went on to score the winner as hosts Egypt progressed and won the competition.

However, Mido's reaction to his substitution is the prominent memory as he rowed with Shehata before jeers from home supporters forced him to stamp off down the tunnel.

He was banned from the final for his furious outburst although he was allowed to collect a winners' medal after making a public apology.

Obafemi Martins - Birmingham v Newcastle, 2008
Former Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan is famed for his man-management skills but they appeared to have no impact upon Martins in a 1-1 draw at Birmingham.

In March last year the striker was replaced with Charles N'Zogbia in the 80th minute of a crucial Monday night relegation clash at St Andrews and, with the score level, he did not appreciate his early exit.

Martins refused to shake Keegan's hand, before continuing his petty protest by sulking on the bench.

But, fortunately for the Nigeria international, his manager believed the reaction demonstrated passion and a commitment to the cause and he was back in first XI for the following weekend's victory over Fulham at St James' Park.

No surprise to see Fabregas in there...

Nani must've been livid, poor bloke.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

Maybe minorly embarrassed poor bloke, but if he was livid then he's not a poor bloke. As a young and learning winger he has no god given right to be playing 90 mins when fergie clearly knows best, he should've chatted to fergie if he was upset, and then accepted it as the best decision for the team, and have some bloody patience...or start performing...
