Does he have the potential to become a footballing great?

He's only 24 and has already achieved so much, and IF, and I stress, IF, United go on to lift the Champions League this month, he'd have been the star man in two CL winning teams, which would already put him above former stars...

If you look at some of the legends (excluding strikers) in recent times; Figo, Zidane, Ronaldinho and possibly Rivaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo looks a bit of a misfit, purely because he does not possess the same passing expertise, vision and intelligence in his play.

He does however have power, two-footedness, courage, pace, desire, aerial prowess and a cracking strike, but is this enough to truly stamp is mark on world football?

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

Personally I would say no but in football you just never know and it all depends on the quality of his performances and how much he improves in the next 3-4 years.

Of course it is, i think he has more intelligence in his game than he is given credit for. He will definately go on to be better than rivaldo and figo, as for ronaldinho and zidane only time will tell he would probably need success with portugal to beat them

His short passing is attrocious.

Ronaldinho is a genius, Ronaldo is a lethal weapon.

Ronaldinho did it for what 3 seasons? Ronaldo has been very good since 06, if he does it at this level for the next 3-4 seasons will that make him better than ronaldinho?

If Ronaldo stays with United for a few more seasons, and stays clear of injury, he will be among the names you have just mentioned Scholes, even though he does not possess their vision and passing ability.

Firstly, I say if he stays at United, because I genuinely believe that Real are on a real downhill slope, and it will take serious rebuilding for them to win the CL again. If he goes there now, he will spend his prime years battling for La Liga, which won't give him the right to be named among the all-time greats.

As regards to vision and passing ability, you compare him to genuine midfielders who required a lot of these attributes to catapault themselves onto the world stage. Anyone who watches United regularly now understand CR in not a regular midfielder and these parameters cannot be used to judge him.
He has a good finish, equally good with both feet, a lethal strike, great aerial ability and incredible pace. Yes, he could be up there with the very best. But he needs 3 more seasons at least.

Ronaldinho was top notch for 5 seasons, 2002-2007, and possessed skill Ronaldo could only dream of having.

I like Cristiano because he is the most potent weapon in world football, but he'll never be complete or anywhere near complete, and needs one or two more world class seasons to match Ronaldinho in stature.

If he performs at the highest level for the next 3-5 years as he is doing now he'll be rated alongside the best of this generation, this generation's Figo is the way I'd describe his stature if he continues to perform. If he doesn't, he'll be another flash in the pan just like 'Dinho.
