Once again, people continue to write Liverpool off prematurely. If Torres stays fit and they can get some decent depth in midfield and attack, they have a wonderful chance.

Those are some large caveats, and it's for those reasons that people don't think Liverpool will win it.

Not really, two good signings will give them enough to challenege, though of course, Torres' fitness is the make-or-break factor.

2 good signings? I'm guessing we're talking in the realm of £20m + for each for them to qualify as 'good' and to replace current starters. I would consider that unlikey to happen given that Benitez seems to have a slightly weaker case of Wenger syndrome with regard to splashing out on big money signings (Masch, Torres, and Keane are the only ones that come to mind) and 2 in one window would be v unlikely. 2 decent signings as squad players though could be much more likely. But then again, would two more squad players really add that much to their title chances? I'd say they have pretty good depth already.

I'm not saying that they should replace two current players, merely that they should be able to provide adequate cover should key players suffer injuries. You're presumption that a decent signing should cost over £20m is slightly ridiculous too. Using Barcelona as an example, Yaya Touré and Gerard Piqué were both fantastic signings and cost a combined total of £14m.

Liverpool are not far away at all from being a title winning side; they already have the wood over the other titles contenders in terms of one off matches, they now need to extend this dominance into consistent form to defeat lower level sides. With Torres and Gerrard both on the pitch, this presents little problem. Imo, Benayoun has proved a more than capable deputy for Gerrard, but replacing Torres continues to be a problem. As I have already advocated, signing RVN and one of Barry/Lavezzi/Tevez will give them a squad to mount a credible title challenge - one that won't have ended before they can muster a late season charge.

I said £20m for a signing that would walk into the team. That is far from ridiculous; I'd be surprised if Lavezzi/Tevez/Barry would cost less than £20m. For the record, I can't see Lavezzi/Tevez being bought. Both are essentially SSs, and Gerrard plays that role. Both would not settle as 'cover-positions' either, and to preempt you saying Tevez could just replace Kuyt, the latter has been brilliant this season and should be starting regularly. I jsut don't see where this title challenge is going to come from.

Don't worry, i wasn't going to suggest Tevez replacing Kuyt; like you rightly pointed out, the latter has had a very good season. Tevez can play pretty much anywhere across the frontline, if Liverpool buy him, he will get games - and regularly - due to his versatility.

You don't see where the title challenge is going to come from? Well, the same place as it did this year - one that came very close - but this time with a fit Torres and a slightly deeper - urgo more effective - squad.

'urgo' = oh dear on two levels! (tragically posh, and also spelt wrong) But I'm not trying to be DaG, so....

It wasn't much of a title challenge this year to be honest mate. Still 6 points after us losing to them at OT and then the week after at Fulham; it was more a case of us fucking up and them doing nothing more than staying in check. Their recent form has masked an what has been a better-than-average season, and I still think we will win it comfortably next year based on current teams. That said, I could be wrong about Benitez's transfer predilections. If he does prove me wrong and splashes out, they should be top contenders.

Liverpool beating you 4-1 had little to do with you fucking up; more to do with them being the better side on the day. Ok, so you screwed up once against Fulham, therefore Liverpool's season counts for nothing? Like I said, a fit Torres and it's likely that they'd have won nearly all the games they've drawn at home, if they can find a subsitute for Torres, they'll have a chance.

That's BS. We defended shite all day (Vidic, Evra, VDS) and they simply took their chances very well. They were nothing special that day, and that score-line certainly flattered them.

'If they can find a substitute for Torres' - I agree mate, if they can find another world class striker to fill his boots when he's injured, then yes, they have a good chance. RVN would be a great choice, but I'm not convinced as to how likely that transfer would be to happen.

I love it when teams lose and their fans blame the team, rather than accepting that the opposition actually played very well.

They didn't really though. I know when I see Liverpool play well; they were good against Hull, v good against West Ham etc. But that day they weren't special, they just capitalised on some sloppy defending.

Ok, i disagree, but I can tell when someone is stuck in their ways. I'd be very surprised if Liverpool's title challenge next year is not stronger than this year's.
