Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been named the 2009 Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.

The 28-year-old England midfielder pipped Manchester United duo Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney in the poll voted for by journalists.

Gerrard has scored 23 goals this season as Liverpool have been battling to land their first league title since 1990.

"Steven's performances this season have been of the highest quality," said chairman of the FWA Steve Bates.

Gerrard will receive the award, the oldest of its type in Europe and running since 1948, at the FWA's gala dinner in London on 29 May.

Under Gerrard's captaincy, Liverpool have pushed Manchester United all the way this season for the Premier League crown - and the title may go down to the final round of matches on 24 May.

Bates added: "His drive and desire have underpinned Liverpool's Premier League title challenge and ensured a tight finish to the season.

"Steven is clearly in his prime and quite rightly rated one of the finest midfield players of his generation and the FWA are delighted to honour his contribution to club and country."

Gerrard is the first Liverpool player to win it since John Barnes in 1990, the last time the Anfield club won the top-flight title.

Second-placed Giggs was named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year in April.

There is no stand out candidate this season. If Gerrard had played as well throughout the entirity of this season as he has since Feb then he would be the obvious choice, but he hasn't. Vidic has been more consistent than Gerrard.

Well done Stevie, fully deserved imo; he has definitely upped his game this season and is more than justified in winning this award.

Winner.

So one match in a 38 game season undermines him does it? I could just as easily say that Gerrard was so deserving of this award when Liverpool were drawing game after game between last autumn and winter.

Gerrard has got this award because of his form over the last 3 months, if you are going over a season i think vidic has been more consistent. The FWA award also takes into account off the field stuff as well, although they must have forgotten about gerrard getting arrested! Personally the players award is better as you have been voted by your peers, the writers award would be no different to us on here having an award

It is in fairness as Writers are unbiased and most of you on here are obviously not

So how many of those did he miss? Thats right not all of them, not even a huge amount. Gerrards form over the last 3 months has been imperious but until the turn of the year he was good at best.

So Gerrard was good until the new year (At which time we were TOP of the league) , and brillaint the lastr 3 months

While Vidic has been good all season

= Gerrard deserving the award

Writers are totally bias. They laud English players, Rooney, Gerrard, Hargreaves, Owen etc at the expense of foreign players (because they clearly only watch the EPL) and they also pick their teams and individuals to appraise. Some are not bias but many are, or have you never read a paper?
