Ah sorry

Yeh, we were in a group with Bromby, Barca and Bayern :D
Yeah and goals galore! Two 3-3's with Barca, a 1-1 and 2-2 with Bayern and 6-2 and 5-0 against Brondby.

Arsenal always used to lose in the second group stage...imagine if we had that this season, 4 extra games to fit in...I was against dropping it and making a last 16 knock-out, but it was a good idea really.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

I thought it was a great idea at first, it is the Champions LEAGUE after all but I think the games were too much yeah. It used to throw up some seriously strong groups 4 'groups of death' but it used to annoy me how we'd play two 2nd group stage games and then it'd resume in February.

It makes much more sense to have groups then knockouts in the 2nd half.

Even the ex liverpool players have said that the cl is harder to win than the old european cup, in fact a couple have said that a cl is worth 2 european cups.

As an example this is liverpools run to the 1978 european cup:

1st round= BYE!
2nd round= Dynamo Dresden (east germany) 6-3
Quarter-final= Benfica (portugal) 6-2
Semi-final= Brossia Monchengladbach (west germany) 4-2
Final= Club Brugge (belgium) 1-0

If you compare that to liverpools run to the 2005 cl you'll see which is harder
if you think it was an easy run in 78, look at 77

EUROPEAN CUP
Liverpool 7–0 Crusaders 2–0 5–0

Trabzonspor 1–3 Liverpool 1–0 0–3

Saint-Étienne 2–3 Liverpool 1–0 1–3

Zürich 1–6 Liverpool 1–3 0–3

Liverpool 3–1 Borussia Mönchengladbach Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Attendance: 52,000
Referee: Robert Wurtz (France)
McDermott 28'
Smith 64'
Neal 82' (pen.)

the irony was in 77 they were on the way out until fairclough came on as sub and scored a late 3rd goal to take them through, and they were up for the treble, but it was united who brought them down to earth at wembley beating them 2-1, my favourite f.a. cup final

Was it 84 when they won the European cup, league and league cup? I know some liverpool fans claim that to be the treble and say they did it first

We could do that this season and sure it is a treble but it's not THE Treble.

yeah, they think a secondary national cup is classed as an important trophy by the rest of europe :hysterics: , they can't take the fact that united are the first english club to achieve the treble, they achieved a treble not THE treble, quite a difference

Diego your a few years older than me and no doubt you know a few united fans older than yourself. Where do you/they think united would be in terms of europan cups and league championships had munich not have happened?

I think Homer's and anyone else's claims about Liverpool not being a step down, or Liverpool being a bigger club, have been well and truly extinguished.

What do you make of their run of games in 77 and 78 Homer, compared to the route CL winners have to take?

And it's got to be Champions league from 97-present. For instance Ajax in 1995 I think just played a group (there were just two groups) and then went straight into a semi-final where I think they met Panathanaikos, then Milan in the final.

I dont think it has been extinguished at all because we coudl do the same thing for Man Utd over a decade earlier :greatpost: Liverpool have always been historically the best english team in europe and thats not counting the 5 european cups they have won. By 1990 Liverpool had 18 titles  how many did Man Utd have? thats right 7 :hysterics: and besides the trophies you will never have what Liverpool have. This club has a real heart and they have some of the best fans in the world unlike those plastic fans down the M62.
