Most of the top european clubs are in decline

AC Milan- DECLINE

Real Madrid-DECLINE

Juventus-DECLINE

Bayern Munich- Not the team they once were

infact I think the european competition is as weak as its ever been

AC Milan never competed in this years competition
Juventus were in Serie B then finished 3rd in Serie A and could well finish 2nd this season, that mate is not a decline, they're in fact rising once again.
Real Madrid Champions of La Liga 2 seasons running but soon to be dethroned.
Bayern not the team they once were.

Well you might as well add in Arsenal, in decline.
Liverpool, not the team they once were.

I know AC Milan were not involved but the reality is that outside of Barcelona all the european clubs are in decline or are not the team they used to be. Juventus have risen in the last 3 years but they are nothing compared to what they were and like I said before English football is at its highest ever peak and then on the otherside you have the european nations on an all time low thats why you always get 3/4 english teams in the semi's. Euorpean cup used to be a european competition with every nation being really competitive but now its just England and 1 or 2 other teams.

Name me some world class teams from the old European Cup that weren't from one of the strong nations Homer.

Italy, Spain, England, Germany, Holland. 5 nations, 5 teams. Who else was world class?

France,East european countries,Portugal etc

Your a great poster but when Man Utd comes into your mind set you can easily lose touch with reality. I dont think anyone can deny that winning the foriegn league/teams are nowhere near as strong as they used to be.

I cant remember the last time a player from United who then went on to join City. It would show everyone City mean business.
many united players have moved to city in the past, kidd, law, cooke, mcilroy, but everyone have declined, none went on to better themselves or even equal what they were at united

on the subject of the villa stoppage time, how can you say it should have been 3 mins shows a total lack of knowledge of that game, there were 2 kengthy stoppages for injuries to villa players which totalled around 3/4 mins, then there were the substitutions which are supposed to count as 30 secs each, 5 mins was not really enough taking all this into account, and by the way, we scored in the 3rd minute of stoppage time anyway, i know i was there

Even the ex liverpool players have said that the cl is harder to win than the old european cup, in fact a couple have said that a cl is worth 2 european cups.

As an example this is liverpools run to the 1978 european cup:

1st round= BYE!
2nd round= Dynamo Dresden (east germany) 6-3
Quarter-final= Benfica (portugal) 6-2
Semi-final= Brossia Monchengladbach (west germany) 4-2
Final= Club Brugge (belgium) 1-0

If you compare that to liverpools run to the 2005 cl you'll see which is harder

Yes the foreign leagues are not as strong, mainly due to the fact that 3 of the strongest Eastern European nations are now split into about 15 countries! So it's quite obvious that it's eaier now, but we're talking about the European Cup here Homer and you're off your head if you think the European Cup is harder han the CL.

Teams like Dinamo Tiblisi, Grasshoppers, Linfield, Shamrock Rovers competed regularly back then and some weak teams made it to the final due to facing that quality from the 1st round to the semi-finals.

The best team bar the Eastern Europeans were from Italy, Spain, England, Holland, Portugal, Germany (East & West?), France. That's 8 teams, these days there's at least 2 teams from these countries competing in the CL and up to 4 in some cases. This simple fact is enough to make any logical person understand that it's stronger nowadays.

Sure you can throw in the 3 Eastern teams who were better than nowadays but are those 3 teams colllectively better than all these extra teams from Europe's elite nations? I don't think it's me losing touch with reality here mate. And we're not talking about Man Utd here so me "losing touch with reality" is not even an issue.

We played 13 matches in 99?

2 qualifying games, 12 group stage games, 4 knock-out games, and 1 final = 19 games.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

12 Group stage games!

Correct me if I'm wrong but there was one group stage and only between 2000-01 and 2003 was there 2 group stages.

Winner.

Didnt Liverpool win like 6/7 in a row? 5 european cups to Man Utds 3

19 titles to 18 titles(75% where only won in recent years)
Didnt Liverpool win like 6/7 in a row? NO
1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84 is the only time theyve managed 3 in a row, this season IF we win will become our 2nd time

5 european cups to Man Utds 3 ok yeah, but remembering only one english side were competing each season in the european cup during the period when they won 4, the only exception was 79, and forest knocked them out :hysterics: , such a great club eh come up against a top side and out they went. and during that same period every in the 80s, forest won the euro cup twice and villa once, must have been a tough tournament then

19 titles to 18 titles(75% where only won in recent years)NO liverpool have 18 any like us 75 per cent of theres came in a short period, and by the weekend we maybe have equalled this.

Great knowledge Diego.

Liverpool is a clear step down from United, I'm clearly unbiased here.

I know :cleverclogs:

I'm positive there was only one group stage, sure that was the first season runners-up were allowed in so I doubt there was even 32 sides in the entire competition!

That double group stage was a nightmare and our first one saw us play Fiorentina in the 2nd group and I'm sure RvN was a Utd player at that stage, although maybe not, Batistuta was at Firentina so maybe it was 1999/00.
