DaGunners FC Rossi Dixon Keown Carragher Cole Kanchelskis Vieira Gerrard Pires Owen Wright Balance, player roles, tactics, and cohesion/understanding are the most important factors in any football team. My team not only excels in each of those categories, but it goes above and beyond. Before I tell you why my football team is so great, you must understand what each positions main tasks. Although many of you probably thing a central midfielders main job is to score, defenders to dribble past players, and wide players to be track back merchants, you’re all wrong. The roles of an orthodox 442, as my team will play, are as follows: Full backs: Full backs defend first attack second, providing width at all times. Central defenders: central defenders win the ball at all costs and make it as hard as possible for the strikers to shoot Central midfielders: central midfielders win the ball, cover ground, and dictate forward attacking play with effective passing Wide midfielders: Creating goal scoring chances first (penetrating into the box, passing), if chance isn’t there pass ball back until new attack can be started, secondary task is scoring. Must track opposing full backs forward runs Strikers: Make off the ball runs or take on defenders to score, secondary roles include making runs to create space and creating, close down full backs when not in possession Now, what makes my team the best in this competition is the fact that all my players excel at their tasks in a 442. Lee Dixon and Ashley Cole were both full backs who excelled defensively. Very good positionally and also 1v1. Dixon was very good on the overlap as well, and had a very composed final ball. Ashley Cole was the best attacking LB of his generation. The link play he possessed down the left hand side was amazing. Not only was he brilliant on the overlap, his off the ball movement into other areas was world class, as was his final ball. The amount of times he played in a winger or himself was astounding. Martin Keown and Jaime Carragher are two of the most underrated players of their generation. They didn’t do their jobs in fly by the seat of your pants fashion like a Campbell or Toure, but defenders shouldn’t be that way anyway. Keown and Carragher were very good, but not great readers of the game. But they were very, very proactive. They won the ball all over the pitch, and made sure they tackled strikers early, before they had a chance to do something positive with the ball. Of course, both players were hard as fvck as well and were very good aerially. (excellent in Keowns case) Moving onto central midfield, you have 2 physical behemoths that covered more ground than almost any player, winning more of the ball than almost any player. Vieira was the best midfielder ever. He ran midfields by himself and excelled at keeping the ball in tight situations as well as winning the ball high up the pitch, putting his teammates in goal scoring positons. Vieira was absolutely elite in every aspect of being a central midfielder. His passing was immense. While Gerrard was not as good physically, he was pretty fucking close. He also won a shit ton of the ball, but was more influential than Vieira going forward. With these two players in midfield, the opposition central midfield has no chance of dictating the game, which means their wide players will not get service, which means the opposition’s attack will be very poor. Robert Pires was the best left winger of his generation. What set Robert apart was his movement and ability to run past players. His movement provided so many options for team mates, and when he got the ball he released it early and incisively, creating many chances. Of course, Robert was also a fantastic goal scorer. On the other side, Kanchelkis was just a poor man’s Pires, but a very good player none the less. Strikers score goals, and that is exactly what Ian Wright and Michael Owen did. Many will say they cant play together, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. Both players are world class at off the ball movement and finishing, and that’s all they need to do in my team because all the others players do their jobs correctly. My team also has the added benefit of COHESION. I have 6 English players in the team, which makes communication very easy. Also, 5 of the players played in the same club team in the same season, which adds a further dimension. All these players are familiar with each other, so the game flows very seamlessly. Also, a further 3 played with each other at a different club. (Liverpool) My last point is what blows every team away: the fact that my central midfield will dominate. The amount of ground Vieira and Gerrard will cover, and the pressing they will do, will allow my team to play as far up the pitch as possible. My 442 will push every team deep into their own half because of the domination of midfield. Add to that my defenders read the game well. This means that my full backs, wingers, and strikers can solely focus on attacking when Vieira-Gerrard begins to dominate. The amount of work they do makes everyone’s jobs easier, which leads to victories. |
