...in the centre of midfield''. A fairly common cliche in football, but how true is this theory? Is too much importance placed on central-midfield battles with regards to the outcome of a football match? Discuss. |

Winning the midfield battle doesnt always win you games like for especially Man City bossed the midfield today but they had no cutting edge to progress further so although it is a key area of the pitch I dont believe games are won and lost by it. |

They can be won and lost if you have that cutting edge but very good post anyway. |

The centre of midfield is very important for obvious reasons. Mainly to dominate possession and gain territory. But as Homer said winning the midfield battle but having no cutting edge won't win you games. every position really canhelp win you games eg. a solid defense that doesn't concede, a midfield that dominates possession, players that create chances, strikers that only need 1 chance to score etc. At the end of the day its a team sport so therefore each player wins you the game. Some positions are more important than others but you cant realistically say that one postition wins the game over another. |

Winning the midfield battle did nothing for Arsenal yesterday. |

There's not much more i can add to what's been said above. Capello thinks the two most important postions are the goalkeeper and the centre-forward... |

Obviously the midfield plays a big part in both attack and defence. But If you don't take the chances created by the midfield you're only going to get a draw or a loss. So although the midfield may be the most important position, without someone who can put the chances away it becomes like an incomplete jigsaw puzzle. |
