When Carvalho is fit, I think he is better than Terry if I'm honest. He has more pace than the Englishman, and he's rarely caught out of position. At the moment though, I would say Terry and Vidic are the 2 best in the League. Ferdinand, when fit, is probably a better defender than both of them, but perhaps his age is starting to show through with these persistent injuries.

Vidic
Ferdinand
Terry
Carvalho
Gallas

In the PL.

I'm a big fan of JT but he's not as good as he was during 04-06 seasons, though he is very good nowadays at bringing the ball out of defence.

Vidic is the most agile and flexible centre-back around, as well as being ridiculously dominant aerially and in the power stakes.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

JT has surpassed Ferdinand this year for me, last season Ferdinand was signifigantly better, but Terry has been an absolute rock lately, particularily in the Semi-Finals.

If Ferdinand wasn't injured all the time and got a string of games like last season, he'd be considered better. He is an absolute beast in Europe.

I agree with GB & Ant's lists but put Carvalho at the bottom now, Ferdinand is better

I don't really see Ferdinand as a burden to Vidic; fact is they are both amazing defenders and are the best defensive pairing in world football. Sure, they might play well in isolation of each other, but that is testament to the fact that they are both incredible defenders rather than they have been unburdened of each other.

As for the ranking the top defenders, i would say:

Vidic
Terry
Rio
Carvalho

The latter duo have been out a lot due to injury but that does not lessen the greatness of Vidic and Terry, both of whom have been phenomenal. Over the course of the season Vidic has undoubtedly been the better player, but Terry has been absolutely outstanding recently and has forged a good partnership with Alex as well as Ricardo.

Winner.

I'm a massive fan of Rio, Vidic and Terry and have been of Terry for years. I remember in 04/05 when he was scoring goals for fun, you just knew he had the character to establish himself as a legend.

As for Ferdinand, he was the world's best defender last season and by some distance.

His performance in at the Stadio Olimpico when partnering O'Shea was top drawer, and his double performance against Barca when partnering Brown, as well as captaining the side like a true leader, will never be forgotten.

There's no way Ferdinand has been better than Terry this season. The only person who can challenge Terry for top spot is Vidic, and it's close between the two, but at this moment in time I see Terry as the better of the two defenders.

I agree Ant, but over the course of the whole season, Vidic has been better 'than the Englishman'.

I hope you're not insinuating that I would look more favourably on an English player, when quite the opposite is true.

He is living proof that hard work and dedication pays off.
I don't think that's true tbh. I think Vidic is as good as he is because the United defensive coaches have tought him so well and disciplined him very well. I reckon I could go to United and get coached for a few years by the United defensive set up and Fergie and be a competent PL footballer, that's how good United's methods are.

What's all this about mate?

I will ignore the comment about yourself because we all know that's unlikely, bordering impossible, but...

What's all this about 'United's methods'?

Did these methods apply when United were fairly vulnerable in defence for years, compared to going forward? :deepthought:

Why is it the United methods that set us apart from other defences and not the personnel? Are Italians great defenders because of Italian methods?

Yes actually, the Italians are as good as they are defending because of the way they're brought up and educated. It is a culture to Italians much like samba football is to Brazilians, you cannot deny that samba football is a culture, much like the Italian culture of defending, it's drilled into them through their environment and surroundings.

I have watched United's defenders closely, and the way they press high up the field, they way they pressure opponents and close them down is brilliant. I remember one time seeing Vidic running accross the 18 yard box and notice he was stepping inside it, so he stepped out again and looked embaressed, like he'd made a vital error. They're just brainwashed into defending in a certain way, and I don't think Vidic would be regarded so highly if he moved to Italy, where defending is slightly different. When all's said and done, it's not Vidic who thinks of these methods, it's the coaching staff. I don't know if its your defensive coaches or Fergie who have this input, but it's certainly a great method.

That is true, but they were taught at a young age, and Vidic joined United aged 24...

Haha, look at you trying to make out it's a great observation, when really you watched Lee Dixon point it out on MOTD :bait: :hysterics:  But yes, we have moulded Vidic into what he is today, but let's not take anything away from him, as he has learnt the tricks of the trade, as well as having incredible physical strength, aerial ability, courage, agility, timing of tackles etc. - You can't fucking teach that, as they say.

I think there is something to be said for Ant's arguement here, is it a coincidence that United have had Pique, Evans, Rio and Vidic on their books - the former of whom also look like becoming world class defenders?
