Arsene Wenger has ordered a shift in recruitment policy from his global talent scouts.

The Arsenal manager knows he must intensify the search for players to bridge the gulf between Arsenal and the Manchester United team who ended his European dream and are hot favourites to retain the Premier League title.

Wenger is set to shuffle his squad this summer, with several high-profile exits balanced by an infusion of proven talent.

That represents a significant change by the Arsenal boss. In his 12 years in charge Wenger has preferred to buy potential and develop it in his own fashion rather than recruit matchhardened players.

"We don't buy superstars, we make them," he once famously declared.

On Wenger's summer transfer radar are central defenders Gary Cahill of Bolton and Bruno Alves of Porto.

Bolton will ask for £10million for Cahill while Porto will rate Alves at £8m.

Former Aston Villa defender Cahill, 23, has been a regular in the Bolton side this season and is an England Under-21 international.

Alves showed during Porto's run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League that he has the physique and power to handle the English game.

In attack Arsenal have been linked with Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz.

But Wenger could also compete for Portsmouth's Peter Crouch, who looks certain to leave Fratton Park in the next wave of fund-raising by the cash-strapped club. The lanky England striker has always proved troublesome to Arsenal both with Liverpool and since his move to Pompey.

Wenger accepts he will have to balance the books. He would be able to sell Emmanuel Adebayor to AC Milan for about £15m, Kolo Toure to Manchester City for a similar amount and Emmanuel Eboue to either Atletico Madrid or Espanol for around £5m.

Would be funny seeing Crouch at Arsenal. He's pretty good with ball at feet but is quite an awkward footballer. He does have goals in him however.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

FA Cup final is the same day as the Copa Del Rey final. I hope I don't have to miss Arsenal.

Would love Cahill at the club, i think he would certainly push Toure for a starting place. Peter Crouch isn't even worth responding to, neither is Santa Cruz.

That's a bit far fetched don't you think? They are both rather tall and score from headers but Crouch also scores with his feet.
