FOOTBALL must start to use common sense — and technology. Darren Fletcher, Eric Abidal and Dani Alves have spent their whole lives working towards playing in a Champions League final. Yet they look sure to be denied this opportunity by an old-fashioned football system which isn’t working. Those who run the game have no idea of what it means to a player to miss such a massive match. Fletcher and Abidal were both victims of terrible decisions in this week’s semi-finals. Yet there seems no way they can be over-turned. It’s ridiculous. Absolutely disgraceful, in fact. Fletcher was dismissed by ref Roberto Rosetti for a fantastic defensive challenge to hook the ball away from Cesc Fabregas. Barcelona’s Abidal was shown a red for the slightest tangle with Nicolas Anelka in another awful decision. Earlier in that game, Alves was booked, meaning he misses the final. But I don’t believe the totting-up process for yellow cards should see a player miss a final — the caution should be carried over until next season. Equally, referees need help. Now.Cricket, rugby and tennis uses technology and so should football. It would only take seconds to ensure big decisions are made correctly. Fourth officials don’t do a lot at the moment. They should be sitting near the dugout looking at a screen, helping the refs get decisions right I don’t know why football is being so stubborn. Norwegian ref Tom Henning Ovrebo had a nightmare at Chelsea. But, even though he got so many decisions wrong, Didier Drogba was way over the top when he lost it at the end. I’m sure he will be punished by UEFA — and deserves to be. As for the final, I think United will win. I was disappointed with Barcelona while Ronaldo was fantastic against Arsenal — particularly for the third goal when he showed incredible determination to run 80 yards and finish the move. Ronaldo will certainly take some stopping in Rome. Harry Redknapp. |

Got up to here and stopped reading. If there was no tangle then Abidal's red was unjustified. However, he describes it as a slight tangle, and that would definitely warrant a red card Hazza. Regardless, the point of the article is of course correct. It's a terrible ruling and it makes no sense. What is the harm in allowing appeals, and then getting a team of specialists to review the decision, which by the way they don't always get right

Was Fletcher's appeal rejected? I know that Barca didn't even bother appealing Abidal's which i found strange. |

Lol, just found the same thing on goal.com. Excellent news, Barca's website said on THursday it wouldn't be appealing - glad to see they've seen sense. I will piss myself laughing if Avles and Abidal get recinded and Fletcher doesn't.

Alves got a second yellow so he shouldn't be able to appeal, Bloody hell you can't even appeal against that in the PL. |
