Arsene Wenger has cited the potential of Abou Diaby and Nicklas Bendtner as the principal reason why he should not spend this summer. Under pressure from his own players as well as frustrated Arsenal fans to open his chequebook at the end of the season following their Champions League exit to Manchester United, Wenger has instead stressed that his primary goal during the summer will be to retain his current group of players after losing both Mathieu Flamini and Alex Hleb twelve months ago. "The priority is to stay with the squad we have. What am I supposed to do, kick out a quality young player like Walcott, Fabregas, Diaby or Bendtner who is already in his national team?" The notion that Diaby is a persuasive argument against spending is likely to be greeted with considerable scorn given that the Frenchman has performed disastrously this season on the few occasions when he has not been unfit. Bendtner's quality has also been a regular matter of dispute at the Emirates. However, Wenger has hinted that he is prepared to make some changes to his squad, and that any player brought in will boast relative maturity. "Chelsea have spent magic money and still not won the European Cup. I believe our team has developed well but at the moment we are still a bit short. "Of course I'll try to bring in one or two in the summer and whoever we get will not be short of experience. Wenger also dismissed Emmanuel Adebayor's comments that the team had gone backwards this term. "I don't take much notice of the comments of the players. They're not coaches. They are responsible for their own performance and not an assessment of the team. "Players at any club say they want to sign big names but never say they need someone in their position." |

Well then Wenger is an idiot. Yes they have potential, but in order to challenge you need 'proven experience' not potential. This is where we have gone wrong, particularly this season and I'm saying now, with that attitude he will risk our current crop all coming up with the goods consistently, he will not bring in experience, and once again we will fail to win anything. Seriously, Wenger is more of a bean counter than manager right now, and if we don't lose key players this season, after a further trophyless season, we definately will. Wenger is no longer the man to win things for Arsenal if he truly thinks that. |

I say we need to cull one or two, and bring in 3 or 4 experienced players. For one, with Barry going to Liverpool in the summer I would pounce once again for Xabi Alonso...I would also buy 2 defenders and a GK. Up front with Eduardo, Arshavin, RvP, Walcott, Vela, I think we will be ok. |

In Goal is probably one of the last places we need to strengthen. I'd say we need 2 CB's, a new CM & a new winger. Maybe even another RB to provide cover for Sagna, as i don't think Eboue is good enough defensively to play there |

Fabianski is great at saving shots on goal, but his positioning when defending attacks is toilet him far too often being caught short either in the box or even outside it. I just do not see him as an Arsenal 1st team keeper, not when you consider the quality of previous keepers we have had in goal. I would rather we invested in another keeper to backup Almunia. Agree with you on the Winger front, especially as I reckon Rosicky will never play for us again, and Eboue is not consistent enough...Ribery? LOL that's purely a pipedream. Because Arsene, they're shit. Diaby and Bendtner have no potential of merit- they are backup options at best. If no new signings are secured then it will be 6 years without a major trophy (its already 5) and that, frankly, is unacceptable. |

Is it not an embarassment that Wenger has turned you from the best team in the land, possibly Europe, to a bunch of no hopers in the space of 5 years? |

Agree partially. We did have ageing players, particularly our defence, 1st choice DM, and GK at the time. Our wingers slowed up, our attack half retired. Wenger needed to rebuild, but it's his gamble on inexperience which has fvcked us up, to which I agree...we needed to replace experience with more experience and didn't. I think one-off's like Fabregas and Clichy (post Cole) deluded him into thinking we could just buy kids and they will all become world class...it just hasn't happend. I see your point but Fergie has made whole sale changes to Utd and it paid off. I totally agree about Clichy and Fabregas though, because Wengers youth policy has actually been an unmitigated disaster. |
