The myth that it is a huge advantage for a team to play the Second Leg of a Champions League knockout tie at home has rather lost its credibility this week with both United and Barcelona travelling away and both getting favourable results. The myth is further undermined when looked at in the context of the Quarter Final ties, again with United and Barca prevailing on their second leg travels, and Liverpool coming very close to an upset at Stamford Bridge. Is playing at home second an advantage at all though? Chelsea suffered from it in midweek in a game where Barcelona were there for the taking; Hiddink's attempts to consolidate a 1-0 lead because of the lack of an away goal at the Camp Nou by the removal of Drogba for Belletti are evidence that teams can, in fact, become very nervous playing at home second and this can have a negative effect on their chances. Discuss. |

The last while I've been thinking it doesn't make a difference, suppose it depends on the type of team you are. I think for Utd, a solid defensive team, it means nothing to me, I'd be content with 0-0 at home and go to the away game knowing we can score and not often do we concede 2. If you're a top team it shouldn't matter. |

I said before the tie that having the 2nd leg at home does not make any difference. |

It only matters with a few teams, Liverpool being one of them. It's only when there's a great atmosphere at you're stadium that the second leg matters, neither Chelsea nor Arsenal, so it was pretty irrelevant in the Semi's |

Barcelona had an horrendous second leg away record under Rikjaard: 6 Second Legs Away in All Comps - 6 Defeats. |

Listen to yourselves; it's an advantage, and in every draw I pray that we have the second leg at home. In Arsenal's and Chelsea's case, it wasn't that big an advantage because both had to be wary of the away goal, but in general terms it is definitely a favourable draw. Which game is most important? Which game is the one with the most pressure? The second leg of course, so to play it at the comforts of home is a great thing. If you can score away from home first leg, which is often pretty likely, then it does become an advantage as you can throw caution to the wind second leg, and if you consider every eventuality, and the scores reflect each other after 90 minutes, then extra-time is always better at home. |

Infact I would be happy to play the 2nd leg away because the away goal is so costly and in the 2nd leg the home team will have to come out more. |

I agree with Homer; I'm far more comfortable having the second leg away as it allows Barca to go forward more, unburdened by the fear of losing an away goal. And imo, having extra time is an advantage to the away team as well, because if both teams score once in extra time, the away side will progress. |

Interesting away goal story: There has been at least one case of a wrong application of the away goals rule by a referee in an international club tournament. It happened during the second-round tie in the 1971–72 European Cup Winners' Cup between Rangers and Sporting CP. This fixture had the following scorelines: First leg: Rangers 3–2 Sporting Second leg, after 90 minutes: Sporting 3–2 Rangers Second leg, after extra time: Sporting 4–3 Rangers Since the teams were now level 6–6 on aggregate, the referee ordered a penalty shootout, which Sporting won 3–0. However, Rangers appealed the loss on the grounds that the referee should not have ordered the shootout, since the Rangers goal in extra time in Lisbon gave them a lead of 3 away goals to 2. Rangers won the appeal and went on to win the Cup Winners' Cup that season. |

Good to know that UEFA listens to appeals from time to time; pity they didn't in the case of Fletcher.
