WHEN Carlos Tevez was a young lad, I've no doubt that he was the one who brought the ball in the morning and took it home at night when he was finished playing on the street with his pals. He has a natural energy and enthusiasm for football that is rooted in the dreams and ambitions he fostered and grew during the days when he was a kid and played all day, every day. In my experience, that's the kind of attitude every young lad has and it can be seen in any city around the globe -- a crowd of kids chasing the ball on the street or in the park. The ball was the target and nothing else. UNCOMPROMISING No lad that I've ever met practiced the sly art of conning referees in that arena. Rough justice was never far away and the street was an uncompromising place too for anyone who showed petulance. It was all about glory for me and the hope that some day, I might just emulate someone like Wilf Mannion or Raich Carter and become a great professional footballer. It certainly was never about money or the need to be loved. Tevez is not alone in the way he approaches the game at Old Trafford. Alex Ferguson has many players like him who subscribe to the fundamentals and don't feel the need to behave like a baby on the pitch in front of millions and maybe even billions of people. Like Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher, Paul Scholes and our own John O'Shea, Tevez has only one agenda when he steps out onto a pitch and that's to win the ball and the game in that order. It's this basic truth that makes it so hard to understand why Ferguson continues to indulge Cristiano Ronaldo and Dimitar Berbatov, particularly when it is so obvious to everyone that every time the two of them line up in the same team, something happens to Manchester United that isn't good. I can understand why Ferguson would pick Ronaldo, come what may. As we saw against Arsenal, the lad had virtually nothing to contribute before he let fly from about 40 yards and took paint off the crossbar. If you could sit down and have a chat with Ferguson about his real feelings where Ronaldo and Berbatov are concerned, I don't think his opinion would differ a whole lot from the general perception that's out there. But Ferguson would also point to the moment when Ronaldo almost scored the goal of the season and provide that as the perfect justification for using such a flawed tool. Even playing with a permanent sulk this season, Ronaldo has scored important goals -- 17 of them in the Premier League so far -- and Ferguson has made the judgement that he will tolerate the histrionics in return for the goals. IMPORTANT But I'm not so sure he would have the same to say about Berbatov. It looks to me like he has made up his mind about the Bulgarian in the short term at least and that Tevez will start in all the important games until the season is done. I've thought for some time that there's a game going on between Manchester United and Tevez's handlers and that Ferguson has been caught in the middle. I feel that Tevez has not played as often this season because of the issue over his transfer and Ferguson was able to accommodate this because he thought he had more than enough options in his squad to cope. But that is clearly not the case now and I do believe that Ferguson now accepts what most people saw very early on in Berbatov's time at Old Trafford. Whatever it is about Berbatov -- nerves, fear, shyness or even arrogance -- he doesn't appear to be able to cope with the fact that he is a £30m striker playing for Manchester United. The equation is now weighted heavily against the Bulgarian and I believe that Ferguson's pragmatism will win the argument and that Tevez will play his part in the big games to come in May while Berbatov sulks on the bench. It's hard to tell what is going on in Berbatov's head, or indeed Ronaldo's. They have certainly lost the boyhood imperative that made them chase the ball along with everyone else and the pair of them have decided that work rate and honesty of effort is not for them. For most football fans, this attitude is hard to stomach and I defy anyone to tell me that they would prefer to watch the whinging arrogance of Ronaldo than the tremendous energy and commitment that Tevez delivers every time he plays. - John Giles |

What a horrendous article. He doesn't think Berbatov and Ronaldo love football? Carlos Tevez is Alan Smith on steroids and the only reasoning this bloke provides for his inclusion is that he runs around. Clearly he has no awareness about other areas in the game. This article has put him to shame. Tevez was not benched because of transfer saga He was benched because he's not good enough, and 3 PL goals all season is not good enough for a centre-forward!He mentions Tevez playing football from drawn till dusk...shame it didn't do much for his rapist first touch. The writer of this piece needs throttling as clearly his understanding is severey limited. Ronaldo yes has shown signs of apathy and discontent, but Berbatov? Not at all, and if he had a widespread understanding of different personalities, he'd know this. I really didn't see the point of posting this by the way. I know you're upset about our strong league position but we've had a Berbatov-Tevez debate quite recently. |

He has only scored 3 league goals because he has had no continuity and I blame Fergie for not giving him enough love and respect. Last season Tevez was Uniteds 2nd highest goalscorer but now he has been ruined this season and its all because of Berbatov. A player who the fans dont even like. |

Exactly no continuity because we got that piece of vampire tw@t in the squad. We Tevez scored four past Blackburn he was then dropped the weekend for an ineffective Berbatoss

For some reason you love Tevez...what's to like? He's slow, doesn't know when to release the ball, can't finish and has a heavy touch. You mention his stop-start season but at least he's been fresh, and he's played more minutes than Adebayor and Drogba for example. |
