Frank Lampard believes that Chelsea were outstanding against Barcelona and that the physical side they showed was something that English football has over the Spanish game. The Blues' midfielder felt that his team were right to defend like they did in Camp Nou to stop the Blaugrana from scoring and hailed the display as a triumph. While cultural differences may have seen Barca complaining about Chelsea's tactics, Lampard hopes that they will be complaining once again after the second leg in midweek. "It was a magnificent result and a terrific performance," he told The News of the World. "As for all this controversy - I just look at it as a cultural difference both in the way the two clubs play and the two leagues play the game. "Our league is more physical and I think that's one of the big pluses of English football. "They always fire up the talk to build it all up for the second leg, to get everyone fired up for it. But the bottom line is it's what happens on the pitch that matters most. "That's where you need a strong referee that understands both cultures, who takes into account the different styles of the leagues and the teams. "We had that in the first leg because I thought the referee stood up to the pressure very well. Not just to the protests of their players over every decision but to the 95,000 fans who were screaming at him too. "It certainly takes a strong personality to deal with that without succumbing which is why it is important in the return leg that Chelsea fans make sure the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge is as strong and loud as possible to make it just as uncomfortable for Barca as they made it for us over there." |

I thought Lampard was meant to be intelligent? Chelsea's physicality had very little to do with the games' outcome; factors that were far more instrumental were a lack of mistakes, good concentration and technically very good defending from Chelsea. |

Everyone thinks Lampard is intelligent because he went to a grammar school it looks as if Lampard is playing mind games trying to put pressure on the referee.

? Many thick people go to grammat schools... People think he's intelligent because he is within the top 0.1% of the population with regards to IQ, and also achieved great GCSE results...not to mention the way he comes across. Either way, crap title...where did he say Chelsea were outstanding?
