Matchday 3 mate Homer, Chelsea is by no means an easy game, we won't walk it like you're predicting, we will need a bit of luck - luck that deserted us in the first leg and not to concede the first goal. If we concede first, i can't see us progressing - we have to force Chelsea to come out. United's treble was by far the "Greatest season by any club team EVER" if you take into account all competitions - that is not to say they're the best team, merely achieved the most. |

Spot on mate, the invincibles were a once in a lifetime achievement which we should be priviledged to have seen. A truly remarkable feat which will not be surpassed until someone replicates it, and even then they won't have played the same incredible football... |

Does anyone think it is possible for a team to win every game in the league in a season? |

Not in a league like the PL but it could happen in a lesser league like the Uzbek or Scottish... |

No. I'm struggling to comprehend the nomination of the invincibles; this might be contentious, but I believe that this Barca side has already eclipsed them. Remember this is "Greatest season by any club team ever", encompassing more than just achievements in the league. Arsenal only made the quarters of the CL - already been bettered by Barca, as have their efforts in the main domestic cup. In the league, yeah, Arsenal didn't lose a game, but they totalled got 90pts - drawing 12 games in the process, whereas Barca are 5pts away from overtaking that tally as well; in the process scoring 27 more goals (already) and playing football that is - arguably - better. You need more of a holistic view before branding the invicibles as having had the greatest season ever, cos they quite frankly didn't. |

Barca's football this season is nowhere near as good as the football the Invincibles played. Cannot even be compared in my opinion. |

Or our attack is just incredible... Regardless, my general train of thought was that you need to achieve more than the league title in order to be considered great, no matter the manner in which you won said title. |

Jog right on if you think Barca play better football than the invincibles, thats a joke. Barca play attractive, effective football, but it aint got shit on the invincibles' attacking, passing game. Points tally is also irrelevant as the strength of La Liga is nothing compared to the PL of 03/04. |

There's just something about not losing a game though that makes Arsenal's acheivement hugely impressive. Everyone has their off days, even the greatest teams, and usually this will result in a couple of losses over the course of the season, but on Arsenal's off days they held together for a draw. Having eulogised about them though, I agree with Elcule that failure in cup competitions means that the acheivement cannot match a season such as manu's in 99, because long runs in cup competitions really weary squads, making rotation in the league neccesary. Arsenal that season didn't have that 'inconvenience' of cup competitions, meaning they could focus on that stupendous record. Speaking of records, what with the clean sheet record, surely if United win the CL and League this season it has to be up there with one of the most successful ever? Granted, our football has not been as slick as usual at times, but in terms of raw results, it's gotta be one of the greatest. People call the world club championship a micky mouse cup, but even if u ignore everything about how diffifcult it is, it certainly was a physically draining escapade, which our squad has miraculously coped with, along with the run to the semis of the FA cup and winning the carling cup, pretty much the maximum possible number of games has been played, and if 4 trophies are won along with that, it has to be up there imo. |

Dude, your clueless if you think that. Invincibles played intricate, pacey, quick football. Barca can only boast one of the 3. |

Yh it was a once in a lifetime acheivement, but so was the Treble winning season. It's certainly one of the greatest ever Premiership seasons for a club - perhaps higher than Chelsea's despite me saying previously that it wasn't - but as elcule points out, you have to take a more universal approach to success when you evaluate 'the greatest season by any club ever'. I hesitate before saying that a team that wins more trophies has had a better season for though for 2 reasons: First, I do think that the manner in which a team wins each competition is a key factor. Both Arsenal's and Chelsea's respective successes in the Premiership were impressive enough to reasonsably conclude that they had better seasons than, say, the Arsenal double winning season of 1997-8. And secondly, obviously, it depends on which trophies are won. But, I would stress the point that a club winning the three most competitive competitions it entered for in one season, though not being particularly convincing in the League, would be a better season than just winning the league without losing a game. Because of this, in my mind United's 1999 season should be ranked higher than Arsenal's Invincibles season. |
