SUmmer 2005

Gerrard is on his way to chelsea

if that deal had gone through, what do you think the 2 clubs would be doing now?

I personally think Lampard would of gone, we would of bought a world class player and the elague positions wouldnt be that much different to what they are now, although we probably wouldnt of been able to attract players like torres without him...

Steven Gerrard admits he considered moving to Chelsea because he felt Liverpool were a long way from being title contenders.

The England midfielder was on the verge of a move to Stamford Bridge in 2005. However, the 28-year-old remained at Anfield.

Gerrard admits he had considered going to Chelsea but is now relieved he chose to stay in the north-west.

Gerrard told the Daily Telegraph: "The reason the whole Chelsea thing came up was down to frustration that we were so far away from the title race.

"That's why their interest maybe turned my head slightly.

"But I look back now and I'm really pleased I decided to stay because I'm part of a top team here that can be successful."

As a Liverpool fan, Gerrard knows success at Anfield would have far more significance for him than winning trophies with another club.

"It would mean an awful lot more to be successful at Liverpool than it would at any other club," Gerrard continued.

"Don't get me wrong, I might have won more medals somewhere else but if I was to win the league here, along with a few more cups, that would mean a lot more than winning seven or eight trophies somewhere else.

"I can share it with my family, with the Liverpool supporters because I've been one of them all my life."

Liverpool would have been serious title contenders. I would fear and respect a Gerrard-less Liverpool...

Actually, I don't think I'd respect the cvnts, but I'd fear them a lot more.

Chelsea would've tried accomodating both Lampard and Gerrard so Lampard no way would've gone. They didn't really need Gerrard anyway as they had Maka and Essien behind Lampard mainly...

Liverpool on the other hand...who knows? They might've won nothing since instead of the sole FA Cup :hysterics:

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Yeah I agree, I think Lampard might have gone to Inter but I suppose that's even questionable because Mourinho might be still there. Liverpool would have bought some class players and Benitez would've built the team he wanted which IMO clearly doesn't include Gerrard. But would Benitez have lasted long after selling the fans favourite, even under the circumstances?

Things would be a lot different put it that way, apart from the fact Utd would be champons that is!

Winner.

I have been saying it for almost 4 years now, but a Gerrard-less Liverpool would be title contenders season in, season out.

I said it two seasons ago, but have become more convinced this season that they could win the league with him; however, Alonso's performances mean that Gerrard should never be allowed back in that midfield and he himself isn't much of a goalthreat compared to another striker.

I think Benitez should buy another striker anyway and just let Gerrard know that he isn't undroppable; i don't care what people say, he is world class and he has a lot to offer, however, at times Liverpool might be better served with a different option.

The fact of the matter is, if they went 4-4-2, Gerrard would replace Kuyt on the right.

Gerrard should not be the focal point of the side and should not have to be accounted for when deciding a formation. The best thing Liverpool could do this summer is sell Gerrard and bring in Villa and Ireland.

Which is exactly why he doesn't fit into Benitez' perfect team. He is half midfielder and half attacker and Benitez wants players that do a specific job, I don't think he likes the idea of accomodating players.

I think him not being Benitez' cup of tea has been apparent from day one.

The team were doing well without Stevie, but everyone knows we are stronger with him on the pitch.

He is a player who can changes games and is very important for us
