Some players dictate games, usually central-midfield wizards, and some players define them, namely strikers and attack-minded midfielders. 'Dictators' include Fabregas, Alonso, Scholes, Xavi and Iniesta, whilst 'definers' include Ronaldo, Gerrard, Tim Cahill and Frank Lampard. Which role do you prefer and which role is most important? Which category is undervalued most? Dictators V Definers. Discuss. |

Dictators are best. Mugabe is my fave, followed closely by Saddam and Hitler. |

I think dictators are slightly more important. Sure you have players like Ronaldo and Gerrard who can win a game with one moment of brilliance or a rocket shot but the fact is there's no player who can define any game at any moment. They have the ability to do it but they don't define every game and that's just the way it is. Then you have your midfielders who can dictate a game and they generally do that in every game and for most of the game aswell, add that to the fact that those players make strikers look better with their quality of passing, switching of play and intelligence and I think they are the more important. If your team isn't in control of the match then those match-winners' defining moments will be fewer and further between. Dictators for me. |

I'm thinking dictator's as well, although it's depending on the circumstances. I think ManYou's description more or less sums it up. To do both is exceptionally hard though, you have to be very special players do both though. The only players who i've ever seen do it frequently in the Premiership are Bergkamp, Scholes & to a lesser extent Beckham. Rooney & Fabregas do that as well, but nowhere near as frequently as the 3 players i mentioned before |

You cannot flat out decide which is a more important role in a team. A team of Gerrards wouldn't be able to hold onto the ball for more than about 10 seconds, and therefore their 'defining' abilities would be largely curtailed. A whole team of dictators would end up keeping the ball for the entire game and not scoring at all (now who does that remind you of? :D). The point I'm laboriously trying to make is that variety and balance are the key facets of ANY team; and if you look down the years, all the successful teams will have achieved this to a greater or lesser extent. Utd in 1999 had their two dictators - Scholes and the slightly more Mugabe-esque Keane - and their main definers - Beckham, Cole, Yorke, and Giggs. Both are equally rare talents, which is shown by the fact that within the current top 4-5 players in the world, we have two definers - Ronaldo and Messi - and two dictators - Iniesta and Xavi. DaGunners, while it's obvious that strikers shouldn't really be the players dictating games, one cannot deprive midfielders the role of definers too. Gerrard, for instance, made his name as a CM who defined games, most notably in the CL campaign of 2005. |

Mugabe is class, he's doing us all a favour. By the way, I preter definers, the result is more important than the performance. |

Most football games are not dictated by a single player let's not forget. Dictate is an overused word...a central-midfielder who puts on a good passing performance does not necessarily orchestrate a game of football. A definer directly influences a football match with a piece of exellence. A team can play poorly and this player will still stand up and be counted. I can't give a definite answer, as it depends entirely on the player. |
