Barcelona Coach Guardiola Infuriated By Referee And Chelsea Negativity

Barcelona and Chelsea played out a goalless draw and the tie is all set for a thrilling finale next week, but Pep Guardiola is not happy at all with what happened in Camp Nou...

Pep Guardiola could not hide his anger and frustration after Barcelona were held at home by Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana boss hit out at the referee for booking his players and not protecting them, while also criticising Chelsea's negative and physical approach to the encounter.

Referee Wolfgang Stark received the first round of criticism from the disgruntled Guardiola as he stated that the man in the middle did his team no favours.

"Referees need to take a look at themselves," the coach fumed. "We looked to score, did not commit many fouls and we should have been rewarded.

"Toure was booked for protesting about a free-kick. Chelsea repeatedly fouled, with [Andres] Iniesta being kicked a lot.

"The experts claim that games in the Champions League are decided in the details and this has not helped us.

Chelsea's tactics were next as Guardiola explained that Barcelona found the game very difficult as their opponents showed little ambition.

"Our aim was clear. We played the ball around and we tried to attack. I do not think that it is fair that the only team that looks to go forward ends up with as many cards as the team that tries to break up play," he continued.

"[Michael] Ballack should clearly have been given a second[yellow card] because Iniesta was about to enter the area."

Lionel Messi was expected to be the star and hopes were high that he would pry open Chelsea's back four, but Guardiola was quick to defend the Argentinian even though he did not score.

"Messi never plays badly. At half time we spoke about him producing a bit more. But when a team is so tight at the back it is not easy for the forwards and even more difficult when the opposition are physical," he added.

"We will come back though and look to play how we know we can.

"With five or six players sitting back, and more most of the time, and with some physically strong players we still wanted to go forward.

"We created chances and gave a good account of ourselves, but football is always difficult when one team does not want to play.

"While I am coach of this team we will go out and attack in every game.

"I do not know if we will lift a cup in the end, but I can assure you that we will go on holiday without any regrets and without people saying we should have any."

Chelsea should be disgraced by that performance. Barca just couldnt get past the entire Chelsea team staying in defense, it doesnt say anything about Pep as a manager imo. There really is no plan B to counter such negativity except to keep trying, they really should have scored on one of their chances anyways.

At home Chelsea have to attack some, I think Barca will be able to score then if their finishing is better.

Guardiola is such a poor manager that he's taken Barca to the final of a Spanish knock out competition, the Semi's of Europe's premier club competition and entrenched Barcelona in 1st position in their league. I'd love to see a good manager!

You're either incredibly niave, or incredibly stupid, but I think it's more the former. Look at the first XI he has, look at the squad at his disposal...I think even Kevin Keegan could lead that team to success.

Countless amounts of times this season Barca have been losing or drawing to shit teams, with Messi on the bench Guardiola puts him on and Messi changes the game and scores. That's not great management, that's having the best player in the world on your team, so I don't agree with what you're trying to say there Kem.

The one thing Guardiola has done for Barca is keep them motivated, not as big a task as it was when the likes of Ronaldinho and Deco were in the side, but still a tough job well done.

Well if that was the case then the Galacticos would have won 4 CL's in a row. You need to educate the squad, drill it, organise it and instil self belief. Give the guy a break, its his first senior season in management and bear in mind where Barca were last year. This season in comparison to last is like a different team and whats changed Alves and Guardiola, so Pep has to be given some credit.

I kind of agree, the lack of alternatives when things don't go our way is one of Barca's main flaws; however, bringing on Keita for Henry / Xavi would have made a difference imo, he adds a lot of dynamism, plus he gets in the box and is great in the air - something that we underused a lot last night given Cech's propensity to struggle under the high ball, his shots from distance are top notch too.

Not including him was a big mistake on Pep's part imo.

Winner.

I have said so many times, but Guardiola is only doing half a job at Barca, and that half is the motivational and mental side. He is tactically inept and brings nothing to this side. I absolutely hate how people can call him a top manager already whilst he is in his first real season of management, he is unproven, and tactically poor. Until I see titles in the Barca cabinet season in, season out, and some tactical nous, I will refuse to credit this manager with praise. He is doing a job that most managers in world football could.
