----------------VDS--------------
O'Shea----Rio---Vidic----Evra
-------Carrick--Anderson------
Ronaldo--Berbatov--Rooney
---------------Tevez--------------

The front four were effective today against Spurs, and there is versatility in that formation with Ronaldo and Tevez able to alternate well. Add to that Rooney's effectiveness on the left-wing and it might not be a bad idea...

Thoughts?

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Looks good, would look brilliant with a proper striker like Benzema up top though and a proper AM instead of Berbatov.

That team looks very good and I'd pick it tbh but I don't think Fergie will tbh, purely because we won't have any real attacking options on the bench apart from Macheda, should it not go according to plan.

that team is way too attack minded, we only played that today because we were 2 down

against arsenal we have to be more conservative, even though they have a weak defence we cant afford to give away cheap goals especially because its the first leg

i would like us to play:

------------Vds------------
O'shea---Rio---Vidic---Evra
Fletcher-Carrick--Anderson
Ronaldo--Tevez---Rooney

i went for tevez because in that formation berbatov wont fit in, him and anderson would provide energy

I reckon Berbatov is a dead cert to play against a team like Arsenal, he keeps the ball too well.

Agreed. Someone like Benzema would be great and a proper CAM like Kaka say lol...

His attitude today was spot on, and contrary to popular belief has been all season. I love the way he links midfield with attack. Denilson would have a hard time containing him between the two banks of four.

Was he getting booed? It sounded like it, the Spurs fans couldn't have made that much noise about him. But fair play to him he just got on with it and proved all the idiots very wrong indeed.

And it was good to see him making a run into the box after starting yet another attack. He got his reward with a goal, hopefully he can learn from that.

Stop being so honest mate

I think going 4-2-4 (don't kid yourselves it's a 4-2-3-1) is a horrific idea to play against Arsenal. Like moe said, it's far too attack minded.

Did you see what Arsenal did to Liverpool whilst playing on the break? Yeah, ok, there's no Arshavin, but seriously that formation will totally sheep United over - they had to use it today because they were desperate, but in a CL Semi Final where one goal away goal can alter the complexion of the whole tie, it's suicide.

I'm not totally convinced with that assessment Cule.

I don't like conceding away goals but as long as we don't concede more than 1, we should be alright.

Carrick and Anderson would sit, as bot are adept defensively at breaking up play, and winning 50/50s, whilst Berbatov a lot of the time would add an extra body near the midfield. Tevez could play on the right-wing to add balance between attack and defence, whilst Rooney could do something similar in his oh-so-effective left midfield position. Ronaldo can alternate with Tevez etc. but could generally play up-top.

We ought to look to attack Arsenal in the first leg and take a positive approach. I expect Park will play however after being rested.

:hysterics: Yeah it could backfire but with Anderson and Carrick in there holding the fort it might not be as weak as it looks on paper. As I said though I doubt Fergie would throw all four in at once, he's not really the sort to gamble like that, especially in a first leg....tbh!

I think Anderson and Carrick will definitely start, Rooney won't be left out and neither will Berbatov. Park will play too UNLESS Sagna has another iffy game, in which case Fergie will set Rooney on him with Berbatov and Ronaldo playing the most advanced.

I could well be wrong but from looking at Fergie setting teams up in Europe, he likes to have that formation where he can change between 4-4-2 and 4-5-1 and this means Carrick, Anderson/Fletcher + Park who seem to be the best trio to operate in such a system.

It just strikes me as an incredibly bold thing to do for a first leg and Arsenal will expolit it, there is so much intelligence in that side that everytime you over-commit i can see you being punished.

I agree with you about what Fergie will do:

.................VDS
O'Shea...Rio....Vidic...Evra
Ronaldo..Anderson..Carrick..Park
..........Berbatov..Rooney

Which can switch to:

.................VDS
O'Shea...Rio....Vidic...Evra
....Anderson..Carrick..Park
Ronaldo.....Berbatov..Rooney

That system is just so flexible and really works well in Europe imo.

Spot on Elcule, although my only doubt is that Giggs might start.

Semi-final, Vs Arsenal, 800th appearance. That's enough for terribly nostalgic Fergie to put him in.

Hmm, yeah good point, that may account for Giggs being rested today. I don't think he offers as much as Park does to the overall team. Sure he's great going forward, but sometimes Giggs can let the game pass him by a little too easily and United really need everyone to stand up and be counted on Wednesday.

Maybe i'm being too defensive minded, but i really think that if United approach this game with care, rather than being gung-ho, they should progress. Their defense is just too good when working well as a unit.
