Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants to see veteran Ryan Giggs win the Professional Footballers' Association player of the year award.

Giggs, 36, has never won the award but is on this year's shortlist, with the winner to be announced on Sunday.
The winger could make his 800th appearance for United against Tottenham on Saturday and is closing in on an 11th Premier League winners medal.

"I hope Ryan gets the PFA award," said Ferguson. "He thoroughly deserves it."

United players dominated the shortlist for the award, with Giggs joined by Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edwin van der Sar.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is the only non-United player to make the shortlist
.

Do you think he'll win it? Would he deserve it or would it be sentimental?

He has been very good when he has played, but whether he deserves it i'm not too sure. I do think it would be a lot to do with sentiment, but i personally hope he wins it anyway. My favourite ever player and who guy who i always loved watching growing up. So wrong as it may be, i hope he wins it for his overall career, even if it should only be for the last year lol.

He will win it...

I'd rather he won it than Gerrard for christ sake, but I'd rather Vidic, someone deserving of it won it over Giggs.

Giggs has been good; he's reinvented himself, and it's a credit to him, but it'd be a farce if he won it.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

he doesnt deserve it and tbh its debatable as to whether he should even be on the list

if he does win it it will purely be down to sentiment

I'm just not sure if it's fair on other players; he has only played 24 games this season and most have been from the bench. Yes he's done fucking well when he's come on, but it's like giving Torres the award despite having been injured for half the season - Torres has, incidentally, played one more minute than Giggs this year....

He's made a very important contribution to United's season, and if this award were issued for the best player over the course of 15 years, he'd be a worthy candidate. Fact is, it isn't, and I think Vidic should win it hands down as he's been the most outstanding player this season, and by quite some distance I'd add.

Lampard is the most deserving of the award imo, he has been fantastically consistent all season and was their one ray of light in the latter days of Scolari's tenure, scored 19 goals this season from midfield - very few of which, i might add, were penalties - and has been central to nearly every goal Chelsea have scored. I also think he has played every Premiership game (haven't checked that).

Vidic is a good shout too and the fact that he is part of the side that will most likely win the Premiership gives an extra strength to his case, but yeah, he has been a rock.

If Giggs wins it i will do a Columbine, absolute fucking joke. Why the sheep is he even nominated? Sentimental bollocks.

Winner.

Well he has been good, and the votes were cast in March when United were still in full flight. But yeah, I think if they were cast now they would be:

vidic
gerrard
lampard
VDS
torres (if Giggs can get in by playing less than Fernando...)
ireland (despite being young, he should still be eligible for the award)

I would say (in order):

1. Lampard
2. Vidic
3. Gerrard
4. Rooney
5. Ireland
6. Alonso

This isn't even Lampard's best season, but his presence alone is pivotal to Chelsea.

The votes were cast in February, and it's only since he's elevated himself with his goals V Newcastle, Bolton and Liverpool x2, as well as two FA Cup semi assists V Arsenal.

He was a better player from 04-07 for me, but he's still fantastic now...massive shame this award is a joke and nominations are made in February.

I think Lampard's passing and general creativity has improved this season, perhaps at the expense of his finishing and it is this, i think, that has led people to believe he has become a worse player. His performances may not be as eye-catching (another reason imo for him not being tipped for this award) but i still believe him to be a wonderful player.

And yeah, i realise they were made in February - which is also a joke.

February ... March ... who cares? They should be made at the end of the season. How else can you make a holistic judgement?

Lampard has hardly scored any long-range beauties in the last 2 years...his shooting from distance has become worse without doubt.

Case in point. People have labelled him a worse player because his performances haven't been as eye catching. As i have argued, other parts of his game have improved enough, imo, to make up for this.
