...that next season will finally see the top 4 breached?

I personally don't, but i think it could be a very interesting season.

You have Villa, who after pushing so hard and falling at the last hurdle, who would be expected to make a few signings in Summer to try and go one better than they have with their relatively small squad. But if Gareth Barry leaves they will be losing a key player and, coupled with the possible loss of Laursen through early retirement, could really hurt them.

Everton - A team which is really starting to settle. They've dont brilliantly this season and haven't even had a striker for a lot of it. Yakubu and Saha most notably. Arteta also out for a while too. They have a couple of decent young players in Rodwell and Gosling, and like Villa will be looking to push on just a bit further.

Man City - We all know what Ant expects from them, but is it realistic for them to break straight into the top 4? Will they really sign the top players people expect/want? Particularly if they fail to get into Europe. Definitely going to be an interesting Summer for City.

Spurs - The past 3 years it's been very much a case of 'next year' for Spurs, but they always seem to start poorly, sack a manager, and fall too far behind so early on that they're already out of the running. With Harry finally seeming to settle the team down, can Spurs finally start making a push for the top 4 with a few decent signings?

And if yes, who will drop out?! United after winning 2 seasons in a row an going for a third, cannot surely be classed as a team who could potentially drop out of the top 4. Only people with an extreme hatred of United would suggest it.

Chelsea - Will start the season with another new manager as far as we know. With their ageing squad, and players like Ballack still in the starting 11, could Chelsea be in store for a surprise slip out the top 4? With their mentality and strong team unit you would expect not.

Liverpool - If they don't pip United to the title they'll have come incredibly close. Had Torres been fit all season they may well feel they would have won it, but in this season a one off? Will they be replaced and go from winners/so close to the title, to 5th, in just one season?

Arsenal - Just like their friends in white from down the road, it's been a case of 'next year' for Arsenal for about 3 years now. Will the signing of Arshavin finally be the wake up call for Wenger to spend more money on more quality and squad depth? Obviously based on this season they would be favourites to drop out the top 4, but with some decent signings they would fancy themselves to win the title rather than finish 5th.

As i said i personally can't see anybody breaking into it just yet. I can see the chasing pack improving and making it closer, but i can't realistically see any of those 4 teams finishing outside the top 4.

I dunno wtf is wrong with me tonight...it's half 3 in the morning and i'm writing fucking essays like this!?

I think its because everyone is hot and sticky

Anyway this was the one season when a team could have broken into the top 4 but instead they have blown their chances and personally I cant see anyone having as good chance again for at least another 2 seasons. Arsenal and Chelsea will be stronger and Liverpool and Man Utd will remain at the same level so the answer is a big fat no no.

It could happen, who will break it? I've never really been fully confident in Tottenham and thought "yeah we will break the top 4 this year", because in all honesty, i've never been confident in both the manager and the squad at the same time. However this year things have changed. A no nonsense manager who knows what he wants from his players, Reputation being the last thing that concerns him when deciding on the starting XI. A strong squad with a mixture of players. Who finally look like a proper team.

Who will lose out on 4th? My choice would be either Liverpool or Arsenal, If I was to pick one it would probably be Arsenal, simply because they haven't been so dominant in recent seasons with their perfect passing style of play. Every season seems to get closer and closer, whether this season will be the wakeup call for Wenger after Villa coming so close we will have to wait and see.

I personally don't mind who breaks it, or who loses out on it, I am all for change, it could have a major impact on both clubs invloved. Who knows, maybe even 2,3 or 4 clubs will break it

I don't really see it myself but it's always said that it's impossible or highly improbable but Everton done it at an average Liverpool's expense, Spurs very nearly done it when Arsenal were poor a couple of seasons ago and Villa almost done it this season again nearly at Arsenal's expense. So we've seen possible breaches of the top 4 a few times recently with Everton the only team to actually do it.

Of course it all came during average seasons for Liverpool and the Gunners and really this is what it takes for it to happen. The biggest problem that all the candidates have is squad size. They seem to eventually run out of steam and don't have the quality to sustain such a challenge,, really these teams have to be able to put together some runs of 5 wins on the trot at least twice in the season and go 10 games unbeaten at least once and to be fair, this does seem unlikely for them. This is the sort of consistency it takes to even mount a challenge.

City could get some more top class players and Spurs are probably as good as ANY PL team on their day they really are, but for me Everton are the team most capable of consistent runs, I just think they need a little bit more craft in the team, maybe a really top striker to make them more of a force going forward. If they can get that, then I think they could make a good challenge but even still, you're asking for one of the current top 4 teams to have an off season.

you're asking for one of the current top 4 teams to have an off season.
That's why i think it won't happen. Whilst the chasing teams may improve you just can't see the top 4 suffering sufficiently to let another team in. Especailly when as you pointed out, the difference in squad sizes is there for all to see.
