. Given that elcule billed him as one of the best in the world, i was dissappointed to say the least.
Why would Cule's opinion of Alonso do that? Surely you have seen him yourself?

DaGunners knows.....
Haha true. Whenver I've seen him play - apart from the last Chelsea v Liverpool game - he's been quality. Not tonight though.

Cule's opinion that Alonso is one of the best in the world differed from mine - that he was a quality player but not one of the best - and therefore watching the game I could test out his theory and see if I was wrong. On the basis of that game, I don't think i was.
He was good.

Won a penalty, converted it, involved in one of the other goals and showed great character to the end, and that's what I've been impressed with most about Xabi this season - His mentality.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

He wasted possession a lot tonight. Seeing as he was playing deep-lying midfielder, that's criminal. A lot of of though was to do with the frenetic pace of the game though as players dived in at all times.

Also, if you're going to rate him based on his penalty and assist, one can equally point out that it was Alonso who gave the ball away that led to Lampard's 1st goal.

He wasn't majestic but he more than held his own. He was a large part of Liverpool's fightback today. In the absense of Gerrard it was him, more than anyone, that drove Liverpool on.

Yh fair point.

Maybe that was more important than keeping the ball. In fairness, no-one did that well tonight.

Absolutely brilliant penalty, Cech had no chance.

Lucas was surprisingly ok, Mascherano not himself.

Even though it may have looked like Essien was not his best, he had a mammoth performance IMO. He has to do the work of all the midfielders by himself because Lampard and Ballack were fucking useless as ever.

Ballack and Lampard were off-colour and, as you say, that led to Essien doing more. But both were important players for Chelsea as the game progressed and got more strectched. Anelka IMO had a blinder down the wing in the second half.

Ballack's disguise ball in the build-up to Lampard's first was absolutely terrific.

Mate, Ballack is shit and has been for many years now besides a little spell at the end of last season. Lampard is Lampard, usually very average in midfield, scores a shit load of goals, and casual fans think he is a God.

Mate, you can't evaluate Lampard in the context of a CM, he's not. He's an AMF. He doesn't win the ball or dominate the game like Essien, but he chips in with consistency and moments of class like the 4th. He was crucial tonight for Chelsea's goals, as he normally is.

Agree with you about Ballack, although he does sometimes put good performances in.

DaGunners, you don't put enough emphasis on goals. You know I'm a huge admirer of the intracacies in football, that's why I absolutely adore Paul Scholes, but give credit where credit's due. Lampard is far from deficient as a midfielder; he is a competent professional, and a gifted one too. He's not going to produce a midfield masterclass in distribution and intelligence, the sort only a few are capable of, but what he does offer you is a goal-threat, and he cannot be discounted. Tonight's game was a lottery, and when big players needed to step up, grab the game by the scruff of the neck, and produce, he did exactly that. Goals win games, and Lampard just bagged no183 of his illustrious career.

Shouldn't #10s, or AMFs as you call them, create?

He does...

In the Premier League:

Lampard: 9 assists
Gerrard: 7 assists.....with Torres up front.

How can you say that DaG when he always gets around 10 to 18 assists a season in the league?
