How important is Champions League performance in terms of how players are judged? Alan Shearer for example only played in the Champions League one or two times with Newcastle; how has this affected his stature compared with a player like Raul?

Should the Champions League bear such an influence?

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

The CL is the biggest stage, and players like Shearer who never play in the CL will NEVER be globally recognised. Shearer won't be in any Italian's top 20 strikers of all time, whereas someone who has produced in the CL will get in there despite being a lesser player.

It helps of course but having said that it doesnt change my opinion of a player.

If players don't get much exposure in Europe then they'll only ever go down as legends in their own country, unless they take the international stage by storm.

Despite not having a lot of CL experience, I think Shearer was a top striker anyways. He was better than a whole host of well known striker who have played regularly in the CL. Of course he'll never have the global fame of Raul, Henry, RvN or Inzaghi but honestly over the course of both their careers, I'd say Shearer was better than Shevchenko.

Not many strikers had the ability to score all types of goals, poacher goals, screamers from 25 yards, headers, the lot. And he was a powerful player too don't forget so much so that he really gave defenders problems like Batistuta or Vieri would have done all too often.

Drogba, Tristan, Makaay, Elber.......I'd take Alan Shearer over all of them to be honest.

You just can't question some players' credentials and for me Shearer is one of those players.

champions league is the yardstick, players are judged by their performance in it, kaka won the epoty and wpoty due to his exploits and deservedly so, but like ant says a player like shearer who clearly is a top striker of the last 15 years, wouldnt get into most foreigners top lists, because he didnt have the exposure from the CL
