If so, what makes it so great? What separates it from the rest?

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

I think a lot of it is due to its accessibility to play - all you need is a ball - and its fluidity. I can't think of many sports - bar running - where the action is so free flowing for such a sustained period of time - someone probably will think of one now and embarass me. This incessant action is what makes it so compelling for me.

Winner.

"If I go to Anfield and someone puts the ball into the box and Carragher hammers it out of play the fans applaud. At Camp Nou you would never be applauded for that." - Xavi

Elcule's got it spot on imo. The fluidity and non-stop action makes it the best sport imo. I tried to watch a game of yank-ball and i fell asleep, for the whole match they barely even played the game...... Basketball is the only other sport that's close to being as entertaining as football, but that's not as good because when you get a hoop it makes very little difference.

Variety is a key point. Take darts for instance, one-dimensional sport, whereas football is scattered with many different aspects.

Another massive plus is the 'aim'. The target of footall is to score more goals than the opposition. Take Basketball for example, and you have over 50 baskets per game...goals in football are far rarer and are therefore more special.

Its the best because of the fluidity of the game and the passion and diversity of the fans which means you can go almost anywhere and you will find someone who knows about the game. I love American Football too, but I only watch my favorite teams games and the playoffs, just because the games are so long. Football I could watch about any team and be entertained.

Personally, I find the sheer 'greatness' of the sport compelling. It's really hard to express, but I'm sure you all get a sense of, well, amazement or magnitude after you see something like a Macheda goal v Villa, a Gerrard goal against Olympiacos, a Solskjaer moment v Bayern.....

I suppose though, that's not limited to football, as I certainly find watching Tiger Woods that the same kind of thing occurs. I guess it just happens more in football.
