Gerrard of 98-2002 was not a special player...he was just a very good player...you could've gone for Lloyd Sam and got the same effect.
Bollocks. You just prove your lack of knowledge by saying Gerrard now is better than he was when he was young and a poor mans Vieira...

Gerrard is a miles better player now than he was when he was young (1998-2002). That is a basic fact; his contribution now is so much better than it was then. He was about as good as Danny Murphy, who played in the same team, in the years you have chosen.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

scholes of 98 till around 04/05 where he was an attacking genius

when he was at his peak he timed runs to perfection, shot with power and accuracy from anwhere near the box, not to mention excellent short passing and long passing (second only to becks) and created chances for fun etc the perfect play maker for my team

im hoping people dont let his lack of tricks/flair fool them

Bollocks. In 98-2002 Gerrard was a physical behemoth who won the ball for fun and drove the midfield forward. Then he started trying to be someone he wasn't and now he is a largely ineffective creative player who masks his deficiencies with a great goal scoring record. In my team, a proper fucking 442, there will not be a better central midfield paring than Vieira-Gerrard. They will have no creative duty what so ever, and my wide players will have very minimal defending to do. You know what that means? Very creative wide players will be feeding strikers who have fvck all responsibilities besides making runs and scoring goals.

Sounds like a team that will be very easily stretched.

Winner.

Gerrard was a nervous wreck who had one great season in that time period, 00-01, in which Liverpool won the CC, FA Cup and UEFA Cup, and he was not their best player that season...

Wingers with no defensive responsibility, two midfielders who have too much energy for their own good and no discipline -means they can easily get caught out of position - all points to a side that can be torn apart by any side with brains. :cleverclogs:

Vieira was very tactically astute and definitely capable of covering for Gerrard. My defenders do their jobs, ie, defend, so my wide players only have to make sure opposing full backs don't create.

No matter how good Vieira is not a one man defensive midfield, however i won't pass judgement on that pairing until i see the rest of your team.

You guys are fucking acting like Gerrard is a passenger FFS. Vieira+Gerrard does the work of 3 CMs in there.

DaGunners puts too much emphasis on 'covering ground'...watch some Italian CL games from th 90s....

Not only covering ground, but covering ground and positining yourself well, 2 things Vieira was world class at. Gerrard covered loads of ground but wasn't brilliant positionally, but that doesn't matter with Patrick next to him and the brilliant defense I have planned. All Gerrard has to do is win it high up the pitch and give it to my wide players. Bang, goal, game, over!!!

Seeing as you picked the midfield gerrard, who was a headless chicken most of the time, viera will be left seriously exsposed.
