This a piece from of a United fan about Carrick, and do you think that he deserve this criticism after playing well this season? Again For Fergie to have Carrick start both games on Wed & today tells me Fergie has yet to accept the fact that Michael never shows up against the big boys. The only game we've played and won against the top 4 is at home to Chelsea and Fletcher started instead of Carrick. This is becoz CARRICK CANNOT TACKLE AND HE HAS NO ENGINE & Probably doesn HANDLE PRESSURE well. It is the quality of Players at United the likes of Rooney,Ronaldo Giggs Tevez,Paul Scoles Pubes,Rio that allow him to get away with this obvious flaws to his game especially for a sitting Midfielder. But when we play against the big boys they will always ask a question or two and quickly expose such weakness. For a defensive midfielder he cant tackle as he is too lanky and doesnt track back with any effectiveness as he has no power, muscle, speed (no engine) hence United were easily exposed on Evra's Flank for the second goal with Cristiano never tracking back as usual. To illustrate my point further look at how we were exposed by Arsenal's second goal at the Emirates 16 passes infront of Carrick's face he was the only United player around Nasri & Fabregas and they exchanged pass after pass without Michael making a single tackle better to give away a free kick ala Paul Scoles Pubes but to keep Feigning to make a challenge and just stand as the ball is moved around him is not the quality of a Manchester United Central Midfielder we have seen the likes Keane,Butt,Robson,Nobby Stiles Duncan Edwards,we cannot settle for this mediocrity. I also know Fergie doesnt rate him otherwise he wouldnt have spent 17 million on Hargreaves after just 1 year with Michael. I bet Fletcher starts all big games from now on until the end of season only for Fergie to bring Carrick back in the final in Rome we struggle only to nick it in the end. It is the same reason we were steam rolled in the second half in Moscow by Chelsea it is only the legs of players like Vidic, Tevez and Hargreaves that saw us thro' to penalties. Michael Carrick was a sitting duck just like he was today, at the Emirates in November and again in Anfield where he lost the ball to Alonso who shot and caused panic infront of the back four only for Wes Brown's to score an own goal. It is this reason Michael will never break in to the English National team he is not a clutch player. Sven and Capello knew this and its time Fergie woke up and smelt the Coffee. I would sell him any day and bring in Gattuso, or even Flamini from Milan. My opinion of Carrick is that in the big games he gets lost in the back ground and fails numerously to stamp his class against top teams P.S.- Scholes don't move my thread I'll sheep you up

I won't move it as it is player-specific, and not game-specific That article, if you can even call it that, has many similarities to your rants... With regards to Carrick, he is extremely over-critical of him. Carrick is VERY solid defensively (positioning, tackling, dispossessing, presence) but is just a tad overrated going forward. He can't run with the ball and doesn't have the pizzazz Scholes for instance possesses despite being good in possession. He is definitely United quality and I am more than willing to have a consistent performer in the 'lesser' games albeit suspect in the 'bigger' games, than someone who shines in big games but lacks consistency throughout a season. The article has tried pinpointing Carrick's weaknesses and it is obvious he has something against the lad, who let's face it has been a good buy. The only bit of it I wholeheartedly agree with is this:
He looked lost today; edgy, anxious, subdued. I am an expert when it comes to mentality and Carrick was not in the right frame of mind and seemed to have his confidence drained out of him. Saying that, he put in a very convincing performance at the San Siro, which is a massive stage. He was very composed and assured in that game so I wouldn't say he is always overawed by the occasion. It is difficult to put your finger on it but playing alongside Anderson cannot be a pleasant experience, but Carrick wanted far too much time on the ball today and was simply not bright enough when he got it, and didn't pass with nearly enough conviction. |

Attacking-wise, he suffers when he's closed down quickly and needs time on the ball. As for defending, he struggles against teams who move the ball around quickly. |

Hargreaves has only ever had one spell of games, and that was towards the end of last season, where he was playing right-back and right-mid, and may I add doing a brilliant job, especially at right-back...but he's never pinned down a CM spot so it's very hard to judge him. Carrick is better going forward and against the non-top 4 teams (32/28 games) I'd rather he played. Very two footed and he gives us security. |

Carrick has always got that indecision in his game, I always see him get the ball, examine the situation in front of him, an opposing player is creeping up on him and the crowd are shouting to get rid and Michael just doesn't act quickly enough. He's like a car with no rearview mirror. He's been doing well recently so I won't go overboard with this but it's an element of his game I've always disliked along with his inability to play a nice delicate one-touch pass. |
