Everton reject United's joint £28m offer for Fellaini and Baines

Everton have rejected a joint bid from Manchester United for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini, according to reports.

The pair have been consistently linked with a move to United since former Toffees boss David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson at the Old Trafford club, but the Liverpool Echo have now reported that a £28 million bid to sign both players has been rejected.

The Echo reports that United chief executive Ed Woodward bid £16 million for Fellaini and £12 million for Baines just 48 hours before the start of the new season, with the bid having been rejected immediately.

United’s valuation of Fellaini apparently infuriated the Goodison club, particularly considering that a recently-expired buy-out clause in Fellaini’s contract had valued the Belgian at £23.5 million.

The Echo alleges that the "derisory" offer was made with malicious intent, adding that, "the shocking £28m approach by former boss David Moyes’ new club, believed to have been designed to unsettle Everton’s prized duo, was swiftly and angrily rejected."

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has become increasingly bullish about the prospect of keeping his star duo in recent weeks, having openly revealed that one unnamed club – thought to be United – had made a final offer for Baines that had been rejected.

The former Wigan boss had been quoted as saying: "Before we went to Austria one club officially contacted ourselves with an offer and it was a final offer.

"They put something over and the valuation wasn't anywhere near the quality of Leighton Baines.”

Everton’s stance on Fellaini was also heavily strengthened after Martinez confirmed a buy-out clause had expired on July 31.

"Marouane had a buy-out clause where it was very straightforward. If someone met that valuation, the club had no say.

"That finished on July 31 so you can imagine during that period everyone was a bit expectant about what would happen. Once that date went, you just focus on working for the next season.”

 It's fucking pathetic. Fellaini would be absolutely brilliant for United in this 4-3-3 formation, and yet these glory-hunting plastics can do nothing but complain.

You might rate Fellaini. I personally don't. At least, not as a United player. Therefore why would I want to sign him as our midfield solution? He might be great at a second tier club like Arsenal.

Baines is a very good player, but again, why would I want to sign him? Evra looks far less shaky now than he did a couple of years ago and I don't want to see him on the bench. Nor do I want to see Baines come in as backup for that amount of money.

When we've been linked with people like Thiago and Fabregas, obviously Fellaini will be a disappointment.

I might be wrong. He might come and raise his level and be brilliant for us. If that happens then fair enough, but until then I'm going to be unhappy spending a lot of money on a player I don't think is good enough.

Also, Champions or not, when the other two potential Champions have both strengthened their sides, were going to want top reinforcements.

Unlike you twats we understand that standing still is in effect moving backwards. City have bought big, so have Bayern, Real and Barca.

We're not even favourites for the PL ffs + even if we were, there's still the CL to be won.

We won't win the CL with players like Fellaini. This reeks of pure panic buying, wait a year and windows will open up.

Yeah, because myself and every other Arsenal fan has been over the moon with our lack of signings this summer. What do you want anyway? Would you rather the club just continued their pursuit of Fabregas even though it's obvious he doesn't want to join? Fellaini is the only option you have to improve, just because he's not the type of player you expected when you decided to cling on to Man United doesn't mean he can't be an important player for the side.

Man United are sticking to a transfer policy that's worked for them over the last 10 or so years, if they listened to people like you every summer they'd be stuck trying to flog over-hyped shit like Sneijder for half the price they bought him.

Not too bad. Baines is a good player and while Evra is in good form, he's 32 now and his best years are certainly behind him. I'm more worried that it will impede the progress of Buttner who looks a dynamic lad, who with some defensive improvement should be every bit as good as Baines.

Fellaini while not my favourite player, will bring an obvious presence to our midfield. Talent-wise he pales in comparison with some of the names we've been linked with, but he might be a more suitable signing than any of them.

I think we have to wait one more season before anything serious happens in midfield. We have Kagawa who will be our little wizard. Giggs and Cleverley can also fill that role ahead of the main midfield two.

Carrick is our main man, Fellaini would provide a lot of muscle and I think we have to give Anderson another shot. We've said it before, but this has to be his make or break season. He hasn't done the job as of yet, but he seems determined to get fit this season and we can't rule out the possibility that he is just a player Fergie didn't get through to, and that Moyes may get more out of him than the great man ever did.
