I saw this piece on a football site. The writer basically says that difference b/w United and Liverpool this season has not been the quality of the first team, rather the quality of the squad. That is why they have struggled in the league recently. To illustrate this, he picked 2 fantasy 11 sides from the two team. The first XI: Jose Reina; Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra; Cristiano Ronaldo, Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano, Ryan Giggs; Wayne Rooney; Fernando Torres. (Manchester United 6, Liverpool 5) The second XI: Edwin van der Sar; Rafael da Silva, Martin Skrtel, Jonny Evans, John O'Shea; Dirk Kuyt, Michael Carrick, Xabi Alonso, Ji-sung Park; Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov. (Manchester United 8, Liverpool 3) The first team was a pretty close contest, but the second team really served to underline United's upper hand. Also, players like Paul Scholes, Fletcher ( who has been good this season), Anderson, Hargreaves don't figure in this list. Is this the difference between the teams this year ? Last year, Liverpool struggled against the top 4, this year they had their problems at home.. According to you, what have they gotten wrong over the two years, and how can Rafa remedy this ? |

liverpools problems really started with rafas rotation policy.he seems to have gotten rid of that since the biginning of this season and look at where it got them.i think the turning point in liverpools season was rafa's rant. |

Funnily enough, Liverpool have started fewer players this year than United. Rafa has sarted with 23 different players in the league, and SAF has sarted with 29. The rotation is not the problem, the rotated players aren't good enough. |

Utd have a cutting edge coming from all parts of the team, the unit is very very good. We have great partnerships between players within the squad, defensive and midfield partnerships in Rio/Vidic and Carrick/Scholes or even Carrick/Fletcher. Evra/Ronaldo is an extremely penetrative duo and Giggs can link with just about any player. There's a lot of variety in our squad, we have the solid base in defence and a whole host of players for midfield and attack who can alternate to give a more technical, physical or speedier attack. Formation isn't really that important, the players move around during the match and swap like Ronaldo and Park. Liverpool still don't have a midfield partnerhsip they know works and offers them a nice balance between defence and attack, their defence is really negative and Aurelio is the only attacking full-back that's any use. It really leaves everything up to Torres and Gerrard and if one or both are missing, Liverpool look ordinary. Those two are the only spark in the team, that link-up is the only thing keeping them near the top of the table because apart from that they're just set up to be compact and hard to beat, they are difficult to overcome when they're on song but there's not enough expression or craft in the team and that's why they will drop points to physical hard-working teams. Benitez buys a lot of rubbish aswell, you can see what he's trying to do, using the squad and keep everything fresh like what Fergie does so effectively but he hasn't got the talent in the team to do this and when you drop Torres and Gerrard you are asking for trouble and dropped points. |

If we're talking about the simplest level of difference possible, Liverpool just don't score enough goals to be as good as Untied. This has nothing to do with the squad, just they don't create enough chances. (This is basically a 3 line summary of what ManYou said lol). |

Its not that simple, because Carragher and Gerrard wouldn't be in a first 11 in those roles, Carragher wouldn't be in it full stop and Gerrard is more a matter of opinion but he certainly wouldn't start in CM. |

Man Utd have a bigger and better squad that is about it. Rafa tactically makes Fergie look like a red nose clown. |

In Europe yes, he knows how to organise his sides, but in the league he slips up against lesser opposition all the time...also today I wouldn't say he was tactically brilliant. His side were compact and organised but their goals all came from mistakes. Not taking anything away from them but that's not tactical prowess. |

It is Rafa who organises them though and he would have spent hours/days preparing his team getting them right tactically. |
