Alonso Mascherano

Kuyt Gerrard Riera

Torres

That is usually how Benitez steps up his team and the 3 players I have selected in bold are quite possibly the best trio in the world along with Barcelona of course. I am a huge fan of all 3 players and I love what they bring to the table so I reckon this is the team you will see later today.

i really don't rate alonso, goes missing in too many away games, gerrard is often over-run in midfield due to this and the fact he's always looking to get too far forward, i think thats why benetez brought in mascherano, as an insurance policy, however his constant berating of refs costs him as seen by his booking in the week

I have a feeling Benitez will try to win the game in his European way, so as to speak, and will play his two holding midfielders protecting the defence. Yes, pretty much like Homer says here.

This season, I think the 3 of them ( Alonso, Mascherano and Gerrard ) have been extremely good, individually they mat have their faults, but as a collective CM trio, they are up there with the best..

I agree with Homer that this central midfield, along with Barca's (and possibly Chelsea's first choice of Mikel, Essien, Lampard) is the best in the world.

1. Barca
2. Liverpool
3. Chelsea.

Winner.

Gerrard should be considered an attacker.

I do agree though, Mascherano and Alonso have been the best midfield partnership in the world this season...

Speaks volumes that Rafa would pick Lucas in CM ahead of Gerrard against United. Rafa just doesn't trust him in CM. Gerrard is a half striker that isn't very creative. Stuck in limbo.

Great player though, but all this best midfielder in the world stuff is so far from the truth.

Agree 100%. Rafa has been totally right in his approach to Gerrard. As a CM Gerrard is actually very mediocre, but as a 2nd striker he's pretty much world class.

He world class as an AM in the CL. But in the prem he is often exposed as a half striker who can't create. Gerrad of 5 seasons ago was a great player in CM.

Gerrard is at his best when he has freedom to roam through the middle.

Most attacking players are.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart
