Clubs can choose players from any nationality they please. Sir Alex can pick any players in the world he wants to have in his team. I would say that you have to be better than a lot more people than justa country to get in his team.
Spot on Cull. You didn't think that through Sphinx.

There is more competition to be a regular first team player in a top 20 club in the world, than there is to be a starting player for a top 20 international side.

It's illogical to think it's easier to be selcted for a team that can pick from ANY player in the world, than a team that is made up of only players from your country.

During the 05/06 season Eboue was looking like one of the most promising right backs around. Good enough to be in the England team at the time, and probably quite a few other top national teams.

Trigs...a club squad consists of around 25 players. A national team can select from 100s of players.

Personally I think it's pretty tight...Liverpool for instance are amongst the top 4 sides in world football, yet field players like Rieira and Kuyt.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

The USA are in the top 20 national sides in the world, yet field players like Brian Ching. Paraguay are in the top 20 national sides in the world, yet field players like Domingo Salcedo (whoever the sheep he is). Croatia are in top 10 national sides in the world yet field players like Corluka.

As i've said, it's not black and white.

i still think the world cup is more prestigious than the CL final

how many united players have played in the CL Final? how many have played in the world cup final?

The prestige wasnt what was being questioned. Just the quality. And Scholes your a bit off there mate cuz the point is that the a club manager can buy who he likes from where he likes. Thats an unlimited amount of players from any country.

At the same time there's numerous players who played in the last world cup final who ahve never played a CL final.

There's strong arguments for both viewpoints at the end of the day, when it comes to which competition is harder for a player to win. For Thierry Henry and Ronaldo the world cup has proved easier to win, for others the CL.

But one thing that is a fact is that the standard of football is better in the CL.

the quality is only there in the latter stages to be fair

if they limited it to the winners of leagues rather than up to 4th place, the quality would definatly be better than the world cup

Sorry mate but that means nothing. The World Cup is every 4 years!

How would it?

You think the quality would increase if Madrid, Juventus, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea were replaced with the winners of the Bulgarian, Hungarian, Swiss, Polish and Belgian leagues?

Yes, but the reality is, they don't.

to be amongst europes "elite" you should be the winner of your league.

for me arsenal have no right to be there cos we are not the best team in our own league.

you can call it the champions league, when 3 out of englands 4 entries are not champions... hell liverpool aint been league champions for nearly 2 decades.

i believe that if the positions for the champions league were limited, teams would have to improve to get there, thus improving the champions league.

but then thats my view on it
