The world cup is the most prestigious competition there is. That does not mean it the best in terms of quality. Man utd would piss on England for example. Barcelona are better than Brazil an so on an so on.

I dont agree that international level is the top level at all. Champions league is easily the highest level football in the world. And Pele would be a nobody if not for his international record, which in my view is why he is nowhere near the best player ever.
Ignorant way of looking at it. Ask any player proffesional footballer what he'd rather win, the World Cup or the Champions League, and they'll all tell you the exact same thing
I don't think they would all say the same thing.

If they say the World Cup then they're more concerned with national pride, if they say the Champion's League they're more concerned with winning in the highest standard of competition.

I'd definately agree that the better quality is in the world cup. Look at the last WC final, Italy vs France, packed with some of the greatest ever footballers to play the game. It's very rare in my eyes that the CL final will have more quality than a world cup final.

I disagree. Both teams had players either past their best or in teams that never really challenge on the domestic or European front anymore.

The latter stages of the CL invariably has the best players from each nation on the planet involved.

I'm not arguing that the World Cup is the most special tournament around, but as i said before, this is because of the coming together of entire countries and how it captures the interest of the whole world.

The actual standard of football is not that great. Greece proved that if you can achieve a decent level of teamwork and organization you can go a long way without having great players. To win the CL you need a set of great players as well as great teamwork and organization.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

to play in a CL final for your club you have to be better than the guys behind you, which could be 1 or 2,

to play in world cup final, you have to be better than all the players in you position from your country which is much harder.

the quality of the game is irrelevant, to be the best, you have to prove you are better than however many other players there are competing for your position, and obviously in an england, france or brazil shirt its more than a united, arsenal or chelsea shirt.

eboue has played in a champions league final... that doesnt make him one of the worlds best players

Finally Phil comes out with something sensible!
Carragher - Not once a first team regular who retired early.
Alonso - Not a first XI regular.
Reina - Casillas.
Gerrard - Often criticised for England.

Clubs can choose players from any nationality they please. Sir Alex can pick any players in the world he wants to have in his team. I would say that you have to be better than a lot more people than justa country to get in his team.

We need to think of some examples...

To back up Sphinx's argument, he could choose Carragher, Carrick and Alonso.

Ballack's reputation mainly comes from his exploits with Germany. 39 goals in 90 apps I believe.

Berbatov has 41 goals in 67 apps, Owen 40 goals in 89 apps, Ronaldo 62 goals in 90 apps, Figo 32 goals in 127 apps.
