The managers of my football team have upped and left, leaving the club in disarray and there's a good chance that the whole thing may go tits up and the club will just fold...

So I have stepped up and taken over!

My first game is tomorrow, against top of the table... wish me luck!

I'm planning on playing a counter-attack tactic. We always play 3 at the back, with wing backs and a holding midfielder. Tomorrow i'm gonna change it a little like so:

GK
CB CB CB
RWB DM DM LWB
CM
AM
F

Ok. My wing backs are both very good defensive players, but are also very quick. My defensive midfielders are strong tacklers, good in the air and generally effective at breaking up play. My central midfielder is a busy bee around the park, linking play and getting forward when needed, contributing a few goals this season. My attacking midfielder is much the same, but i'm probably giving him the license to roam, providing that he chases the ball down in the middle of the park. My striker... he's the jewell in the crown. Probably the fastest bloke i've ever played with. He can score from anywhere, skin anyone and is really strong too.

My idea is this; they're top of the league, unbeaten all season and very good on the flanks. I'm covering those flanks with deep wing backs to try and prevent them exploiting that. I'm keeping 2 defensive midfielders, who have to be disciplined, to break the play up and pump long balls forward to the front man, who hopefully, with his pace and strength, will create a few chances for himself. The CM and AM will be there to support, and the wing backs will be asked when we are going forward, to bust a gut and get up to support. When they do that, the DM's will drift out to cover the respective wings.

I'm really hoping that with discipline, and good defending, we can hit them on the break and cause an upset.

Any advice (constructive) would be appreciated.

Gaffer

Are you really big underdogs?

Anyway, that team looks really effective.

-----------GK---------
|----CB...CB...CB----|
v RWB----------LWB v
--------DM...DM-------
------CM---------------
---------------AM------
-------------------------
------------F-----------

That team looks disciplined and defensively solid, and as you say, the lack of support for the forward shouldn't be that big a problem. I once played with a big black bloke up front and he could create chances out of nothing due to his sheer pace and power.

He'll need a bit of support though so encourage the wingbacks to push forward when in possession and offer that all-important width. Though at the same time, make sure your DMs are prepared to cover any holes that might leave.

Good luck.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Thanks mate, you obviously understand my thinking... now I just have to convey it to the players.

When I was 23 I ran a Sunday side in senior football. We were in division 1 and beat 3 teams in the Premier division on our way to the cup final at Carrow Road. We won the league by a country mile also.

Shame we got beaten 5-0 in the final....

Cheers moley.

I'm planning my team talk (supposed to be working, but football is more important lol) and it's a bugger. I wish I could grab hold of some Fergie team talks!

I'll have to make do with the "Mourinho" talk before he broke out into that song about his coat....

Ok, i'm back after the game and....

WE FUCKING WON!!! GET IN!!!

My tactic worked an absolute treat. They couldn't handle our quick guy up front and because we so were quick to support him we completely overran them in the first half. After about 30 minutes one of the DM's set the striker free and he took on their defence, created a bit of space, spotted the keeper off of his line and dinked it over him. My decision to start him instead of our leading goalscorer had been justified.

After around 60 minutes we scored another from a corner and it looked like game over. They scored with 2 minutes to go, and were threatening to equalise as we grew tired, but we held on to a memorable victory.

I'm so chuffed, and dare I say it, enjoyed it more from my position on the sidelines than I do when I play in these types of games. 2-1, against top of the table... GET IN!!!!
