Platini war cry: UEFA chief on collision course with Premier League over curbing spending By CHARLES SALE Last updated at 1:12 AM on 06th February 2009 Comments (0) Add to My Stories Michel Platini put himself on a war footing with the Premier League yesterday by pledging to curb the power of their big-spending clubs with stringent new financial regulations for European competitions. Silly money: The bid for Kaka infuriated Platini The UEFA president used Manchester City’s failed £100million attempt to sign Kaka from AC Milan to explain why he wants a level playing field. ‘How one guy can cost £100million is ridiculous from a social, football and financial point of view,’ said Platini. ‘It’s why we have to do something to have transparency and fairness in football. It’s not good for the popularity of football.’ Platini, who has made no secret of his opposition to the money-laden Premier League since becoming UEFA president two years ago, wants rules brought in for the Champions League and newly-named Europa League which force clubs to operate within a certain budget. And he warned that clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea, with their huge debts dependent on foreign owners, will be kicked out of the Champions League and replaced by clubs lower down the table if they refuse to adhere to the financial restraints. All the far-reaching proposals, which include preventing clubs from spending above their football generated income, limiting wages to a fixed proportion of revenue and reducing the size of squads, will be debated at UEFA’s strategy council in May with the intention of implementing the agreed changes in a three-year period. Platini also hopes to abolish the January transfer window as he wants to stop players performing for two clubs in the same league in one season or spending just three months somewhere on loan — a reference to David Beckham’s time at AC Milan — which he will discuss urgently with FIFA. He said: ‘It’s not ethical when you play for one club in a competition and then play for another in the same competition in the same season. I think a player should play for at least a season, not just for three months.’ Platini has not spoken directly to any Premier League clubs, but says he has widespread backing for his plans, including from the European Clubs’ Association, chaired by Germany’s Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Time to take action: Platini wants to curb spending at the top level But the Premier League, who have five clubs, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle in the ECA, countered last night that none of them were backing Platini’s plans. Platini said: ‘England is different because in the rest of Europe the national association is the boss of football, but in England there is a big power in the Premier League. They do what they want and sometimes against the FIFA statutes. I just have a philosophy that everyone should be able to win the league but more and more that cannot happen.’ The UEFA president also wants to stop the trafficking of players under 18 from around the globe into Europe’s wealthy clubs to encourage them to develop their own talent. He said: ‘At Manchester City they can work with young players in Manchester and bring them to the academy so they can find their own Kaka and not have to spend £100m. ‘But it’s not an English problem, it’s a European problem and I have to find a good system which allows everybody a chance to win.’ Platini is aware that even if he changes the rules for European competition, he will not be able to prevent the Premier League from carrying on as normal. This guy really winds me up, it was alright when the spanish and italian clubs were racking up massive debt signing all the best players, but when english clubs start doing it (and only chelsea have racked up debt doing it) its suddenly wrong. I don't know the legality of even trying to implement what he's suggesting but it's a safe bet that the clubs affected will tie this up in legal red tape for years. He goes on about having leagues where 'everyone can win the league', well perhaps he should start with his own country because lyon have won the league for the last 7 years. It's the money in the cl that has caused the problem, if you get into it you can spend the money you get from it to ensure you are in it the following season and on it goes I cannot understand how you can have someone, who is so blatantly against english clubs and the premier league, in charge of european footballs gouverning body Edited by roonaldo, Feb 6 2009, 08:21 AM.

With Blatter and Platini at the helm I doubt very much that England would win the World cup bid...any chance to slam the Premiership...they jump at the chance...

I agree with his point of view, the monopolization of football by a handful of clubs is terrible for the game. But his racism is uncalled for and destroys the sound basis of his argument. |

That monopilisation was caused by uefa tho, when they changed the european cup into the champions league and expanded the competition from league winners to the top 3/4 from each country, plus the broadcasting companies who pay massive amounts to show it |

True...but as Fluke said earlier...wouldn't another all-English final be the perfect finger in the air response

I think he always makes a bit of sense tbh. Of course you can tell he's a bit anti-English by the way he centres his arguements around the PL but abolishing the transfer window is a great idea, it means the managers have to actually manage their squads for a whole season and it's a test of their skills as opposed to them buying their way out of trouble. There's no substance in his claim that English football is at the centre of big transfers, Italian and Spanish clubs were the first ones to introduce £20m and £30m transfer fees. Crespo, Veron etc. moving for large fees and this was back at the start of the new millenium. Since around that same time, Utd have been able to compete finacially with those clubs, Chelsea then had Roman and IMO both Utd and Chelsea are pretty much on a par with the other top clubs as far as spending power is concerned. Italian clubs pay big fees if they need to, I mean how much did Ibrahimovic go for? £30m? I think the transfer window is a bad idea, particularly if you get a club pushing the big guns and then in January their star player gets nicked off them just to warm the bench at Chelsea, Utd or Liverpool. The league will never progress like that. |
